DEAD RECKONING

In The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, Tommy Lee Jones’s big-screen directorial debut, the actor plays a Texas rancher compelled to avenge the death of a Mexican worker. As usual, his performance is as deep as the grooves on his craggy, primordial face. More significantly, Three Burials marks the arrival of a canny, restrained yet sympathetic filmmaker.
