New England Highway from Sydney to Brisbane..

Take the Pacific Highway from Sydney to Newcastle (between 2 and 3 hours driving) and turn off inland onto the New England Highway at Hexham, a Newcastle suburb.

An overnight stop could be made either in the Hunter Valley Vineyards or in Port Stephens on the coast which are only short detours off the Pacific Highway at this point.

On leaving the upper Hunter Valley at Murrurundi (3 ½ hours driving time from Newcastle) follow the New England Highway to Tamworth which is a further 1 hours driving time. Tamworth is the Country music centre of Australia.

An Alternate scenic route through rugged High Country can be taken from the Hunter Valley via Bucketts Way and Thunderbolts Way, (after a bushranger of early Australian times), with an overnight stop in the Gloucester/Barrington Tops area. Turn left off the Pacific Highway 15km north of Raymond Terrace to access this route The New England Highway can be rejoined near Armidale 2 hours on from Gloucester, but past Tamworth.

From either Tamworth or Barrington Tops/Gloucester, a 3 hour Drive will take you to Glen Innes which was an early Scottish Settlement and is full of history.

From Glen Innes to Brisbane will take 4 hours driving.
