BAJA TRIPS
THREE ISLANDS; SAN JOSE, SAN FRANCISCO AND ESPIRITU SANTO
8 Days
[ Rates and Dates | Trip Details | Checklist ]
Rich in wildlife, pearling history and local fishing and ranching culture the beautifu islands of San Jose, San Francisco and Espiritu Santo lie just north of the sea side town of La Paz in the southern Sea of Cortez. Kayaking, snorkeling and fishing are unsurpassed in the surrounding waters of these remote islands. Fall trips (October and November) offer clear, warm water temperatures (80 degrees F) for exceptional snorkeling. The magic of these islands is enhanced in spring (March and April) as the surrounding waters come alive with migrating whales. Spring plankton blooms draw the worlds largest mammals, the great whales; blue, fin, brydes, humpback, pilot and sperm whales have all been observed here in spring while large pods of common and bottlenose dolphins are seen year round. |

THREE ISLANDS; SAN JOSE, SAN FRANCISCO AND ESPIRITU SANTO
8 Days

With our motorized skiff-supported trips we can offer a flexible itinerary combining a variety of activities each day. Skiffs are used for accessing the best snorkeling and fishing spots otherwise inaccessible by kayak. They also provide speedy transport, with kayaks stowed in the racks above over expansive water crossings such as the 18-mile crossing from San Francisco to Espiritu Santo Island. Our beach camps offer beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and sea providing ringside seating as whales and dolphins swim past.
SAMPLE ITINERARY: One of the advantages of a sea kayaking trip is the flexibility of the daily itinerary. It can vary widely from one trip to the next based on group desires and Mother Nature.
DAY 1: Fly to La Paz. Transfer to hotel evening on your own to explore La Paz and dine at one of it's many fine restaurants.
DAY 2: Early breakfast at hotel. Pick up rental gear at our office then transfer to San Jose Island via van and boat (approximately 5 hours). Lunch upon arrival at camp, camp and kayak orientation followed by a short afternoon paddle.
DAY 3-5: Daily excursions of kayaking, snorkeling, hiking and fishing as we explore our surroundings. We will paddle from camp to camp between San Jose and San Francisco islands, changing camps every other day weather permitting. Other activities include snorkeling, hiking and fishing excursions daily and possible outings in the skiff to observe whales when present (spring trips). This trip takes us into a remote area rich in natural and cultural history. Breaks along the way may include the small fishing and ranching villages of Palma sola, Nopolo and the quaint village of El Pardito (Peter Benchley's book, "The girl of the Sea of Cortez" was based on this village) where we will visit with the friendly families living here for a glimpse of traditional Mexican fishing and ranch life.
DAY 6: Transfer to Espiritu Santo island by boat. En route we visit one of our favorite snorkeling spots, the sea lion rookery of Los Islotes. Here we snorkel among playful sea lions enjoying their graceful and curious nature first hand. Paddling, hiking and snorkeling along the shores of the most beautiful island in the Sea of Cortez. White sand beaches and turquoise waters are Espiritu Santo's trademark.
DAY 7: After lunch transfer to La Paz by boat and check into the hotel. Afternoon and early evening on your own to shower and take a walk into downtown La Paz before meeting for the farewell dinner at a nearby restaurant that evening.
DAY 8: Transfer to the La Paz airport from the hotel (approximately 20 minutes) for departure to the USA.
**NOTE**
The above itinerary may be reversed at any time starting with Espiritu Santo Island and ending with San Jose island. Arrival and departure into La Paz remains the same, only reversed.
