suburb of Battery Point. If you're hungry, dine out at a seafood
restaurant or purchase your meal live from local fishermen near Hobart's Constitution
Dock. To the northern end of the waterfront is the Gasworks
Village. The craft shops and galleries are along with Australia's only
commercial whiskey distillery. Also several pubs lining the Hobart
Waterfront include the historic Customs House Hotel are there. The
Parliament House is located between the docks and Salamanca Place, occasionally
open for public viewing. Hobart's waterfront is only about
five-minute-walk from the centre of the city.
Glenorchy & Northern
Suburbs
Glenorchy borders the
northern edges of Hobart and forms part of the Greater Hobart area. Go
to the Glenorchy Aquatic Leisure Centre in the city centre, and the
Tasmanian Transport Museum where you can find old trams and trains. In
Glenorchy, the Royal Hobart Show grounds, the Elwick Racecourse and the
Derwent Entertainment Centre (DEC) are the three state's premiere
entertainment venues. Head to the north at Claremont are the
Australia's largest chocolate factory, Cadbury Schweppes and Alpenrail
which is the largest and most realistic model train setup in Australia.
Looking for good wine? -- visit Moorilla Estate (one of the Tasmania's
oldest vineyards) which is located at Berriedale. At the suburb of
Lutana, you can find one of the larger zinc refineries in the world,
the Electrolytic Zinc works.
Clarence & the Eastern
Shore
Clarence is a city on the
eastern shore of the Derwent River. Hobart Airport is located on the
eastern shore at Cambridge. Bellerive is a fort located on Kangoroo
Bluff, overlooking the Derwent River and Mt. Wellington. Bellerive
Oval is the location for international cricket matches held in
Tasmania. Higher up the Derwent River is Risdon Cove. There are
three vineyards - Crosswinds, Orani, and Palmara - on the eastern
shore. The Baskerville Raceway (motor racing) is located at Brigewater,
one of the three main spots below the Derwent headwaters where
cars cross the river. Nearby Brighton is the Bonorong Wildlife Park
which features wombats, koalas, Tasmanian devils, and kangaroos. Some
of the region's best beaches including the Seven Mile Beach Protected Area
are in the South of the Clarence-Bellerive area. Surfers should not
miss good surf beaches at South Arm and Clifton Beach which is just some distance
away from the city.
Hobart's Southern Suburbs
The southern suburbs of Hobart include
Sandy Bay, Mt. Nelson and Taroona. The University of Tasmania's
largest campus is at Sanday Bay, one of Hobart's more upscale suburbs.
Near the University, Wrest Point, Australia's first casino is located as is
the Royal Yacht Club which hosts the Tasmanian end of the Sydney to Hobart
yacht race. The Signal Station on Mount Nelson (the site of the
south's largest senior secondary college) was established early last century
as a relay point for communications from the Channel area to Hobart. The
station affords excellent views across the river and has dining facilities.
Adjoining the Signal Station is Truganini Reserve which has a walking track
to Taroona which is one of Hobart's outer suburbs and features a model Tudor
village and the Shot Tower.
