They are in and getting all hooked up to become the heart of the Kuuloa Kai. It has been a long drydock, we have done alot to make her a better boat. Today we had to realign the strut on the starboard side, so we should be vibration free. I can hardly wait to get back to fishing again. Aloha Capt Rusty

It is going to be a long drydock, but it was time to repower with 2 new engines that will keep us going for a long time. We will be faster and more efficient with these engines in.  As much as I have liked being able to go surf in the mornings, I do miss being out there on the water fishing. More photos as it comes together. Aloha Capt Rusty

This shot is by my friend Jamie Ballenger, from his web site called hawaiian watershots . com. The same place the other shots came from. This was out of a sequence of about 15 shots on that wave, if you look on that day on his site it is in the group numbered 625-672. There are a few other shots of me  in that same area of that day. We are making progress on the boat, new covering boards are being made by my dad to replace the thinning teak. New Rudder ports are on the way and the endless fibergass work here and there is ongoing. My favorite thing about dry dock is that I get to surf the dawn patrol at chuns every morning that the surf is good. Aloha Capt rusty

This engine had seen better days, it was time for a change. More progress reports to follow. Aloha Capt Rusty

Click to enlarge Click to enlarge  Ralph Morgan, and Jason Bishop caught 3 mahi 5 shibi and 5 aku for a fun day
We got going at 5:30, but came right back in to correct a minor problem and back out again on this day of 25 knot trades going to my old favorite buoy. On the way we got a small mahi. At the buoy we jigged and caught some small aku and shibi, and ran one live. We had a shark eat one of our shibi as Ralph reeled it in. Not much came in then we baited. On our way in we got another small mahi trolling and came back and Scot baited up a big 30 pound bully, and Ralph got it. In the harbor both of these guys ate shibi eyeballs happily, good going men, they did great today. Aloha Capt Rusty

We got going at 4:30 on this day of 25+ trades going to my next favorite buoy. At the buoy we jigged and caught some small aku and had a shark come up and almost eat one. Then we got a bigger shibi on and a shark did eat it. The small aku were biteing good so we caught some more. It was a rough day of rock and roll all day. On our way in we had a mystery strike on the center but it came off. Near the harbor we had a mahi hit but it came off, so we came back with bait and Scot baited up a small mahi and we got it. In the harbor all these guys gladly ate eyeballs, good going men. Aloha Capt Rusty

Click to enlarge Click to enlarge  Nate, and Guy Hicklin caught 8 shibi and 2 aku and fought a huge marlin for 6 hours
We got going at 4:30 on this day of 20 knot west winds going to my next favorite buoy. We got there at first light and jigged and caught some shibi and aku, 2 of them 30 pounders. When we baited Scot hooked a few shibi, then a really big marlin showed up right behind the boat. We hooked up an aku and tossed it out, this monster gladly ate it and hooked up. It slowly took out 3/4 of a spool of line, then Guy reeled it in to about 150 yards and it took off again. This time it ran out almost all the line on the reel. Guy reeled it back in, and then it ran out 1/2 spool of line, when it came back this time it came close enough to see it about 40 feet down. But it would not come to the boat, this was at the 3 hour mark. For the next hour or so we could see it but never got it up. Then it made one last deep run that we could not stop. As the spool was down to the last 30 feet of line, the pole broke under the strain. We managed to keep the pole in the boat and started to handline it back up. It was a miracle the the 150 pound test maxima did not break under the pull as we tried to get this marlin that had to be over 800 pounds to come up. After an hour or more of 2 or 3 of us pulling on the line it finally broke at the knot. Guy did and absolutly fantastic job reeling on this fish for over 4 1/2 hours. Back in the harbor they both ate eyeballs gladly, great going men. Aloha Capt Rusty
