We got a 5:15 start to the LL buoy and took a mystery slam on the way and it came off. At the buoy we got some small ahi and aku. Then Kevin got a 15 pound aku and a 10 pound ahi and Brad caught a 10 pound ahi too. Then while baiting, a nice sized mahi grabbed our live bait and came off only to go back and eat an anchovy on 40 pound test, Brad did a great job of angling it to the boat only to have it give Scot the slip at gaff (bummer). On the way in we stopped at he crab traps to try for a shark and there was one there for Kevin, he did a great job of reeling a 5 foot long shark to the boat where we took pictures and released it. In the harbor Brad was the only one bold enough to go for the eyeball, he liked it. Fun folks to fish with. Aloha Capt. Rusty

We got a 5:45 start on this smoking day of 30 mph winds to the X buoy. It was a wet and wild ride and then no strikes on the trolling lures when we got to the buoy. But the small ahi were wild at times. Larry would simply drop his squid lure in the water 3 feet from the boat and hook up. It helped that Scot was dropping out anchovies to keep the fish close too. Then Ross caught a 15 pound ahi on the sporty 40 pound test, that was a good fight. Then we went out to 23 miles and found nothing. And nothing on the way in either, we then baited around the crab boat and no sharks came, but 2 small mahi showed up and Scot baited them up. In the harbor both Larry and Ross were game to eat ahi eyes. Ross found out that if you chew them they will stick to your teeth. These guys did real good considering how extremely rough it was today. We got a nice early 5 AM start to the X buoy and on our second pass Craig caught a 15 pound ahi. On the light line the small ahi were biting real good doubles and triples each pass. We got a bunch of those and then went outside to 28 miles. On the way we found 2 open schools of mahi but they broke up before we could get in them. On the way back in we took a double big aku and got one 20 pounder. Then we had a strike that came off, then an 18 pound mahi grabbed the rigger and stuck. We had one more mahi slam that came off 5 miles out. In the harbor Craig and Michael were the only ones bold enough to try an ahi eye with me. You guys did good. Aloha Capt. Rusty

We got a 6 am start to the X buoy, on this day of 25 mph trade winds, making it a bit bumpy. The first pass on the buoy we took a double ahi strike one small one and one 25 pounder, Frank reeled that one in. We then caught some 5-8 pound Bigeye tuna on light line and one aku. Then it was time to go out and do some hunting. We went out to 23 miles and found a current line and caught one small mahi there. On the way in we found an open school of mahi and got one out of a double strike. It was a nice 25-pound wahine. Mark did a good job on that one. In the harbor everyone except Martin participated in the eyeball eating ritual, almost a clean sweep. It was good fishing with these guys. Aloha Capt Rusty

We got a 5:30 start to the LL buoy and took a slam on the outrigger on the way there but it came off. At the buoy there were a bunch of pilot whales hanging around, loitering right next to the buoy. We were surprised when the aku and small ahi hooked up with the whales there. We caught one 15 pound ahi and a bunch of smaller ones and took off heading down towards the X buoy area. Three miles from the X we found a massive school of porpoise, they were running around fast and flying out of the water, it was a great show. On to the X buoy and a mile from there we found a school of big aku and caught 8 ranging from 10 to 17 pounds. In the harbor it wasn't to hard to get David and Eric to join me in eyeball pupus, Eric was surprised that they tasted so good. I almost forgot about the shark that Eric caught at the LL on 80 pound test, he did a great job of pulling it up and then we tagged it and it broke off. Aloha Capt. Rusty

We got a 6:30 start to the X buoy and only got small aku and ahi there. Then on out to 24 miles out and then down to 15 miles outside the II area where we found something we dream of finding, a floating Matson container about 25 feet long sticking 1/3 out of the water. I would have sworn that on the first pass we would have taken a multiple strike but nothing happened, we saw no fish took no hits. On our third pass we hooked a 10 pound ono and got it. I was in deep denial, I could not believe here was this killer floater and that was all that it had to offer. We baited and nobody came , so we trolled some more and got one more ono and a 10 pound aku and left, still in disbelief. In the harbor both Barry and Roland consumed the ono eyes without to much persuading. I'm going to have nightmares about that floater. Aloha Capt. Rusty

The Perseid meteor shower was going off this morning. Between 5 and 6:45 AM when it got light, I counted 24 meteors, more than I have ever seen at one time. The X buoy was still only holding small baits, so we caught a few and headed outside. At 26 miles we found a school of mahi, and took 4 strikes before we finally caught 2, 12 pounders. Then the school broke up and we headed back in. In the area of the II buoy we found a few Iwa birds (frigate birds) hanging around and took a triple big aku (16 pound size), we only got one out of the three, but we took another double and got both of them in the boat. It was a fun day they were both troopers. Aloha Capt. Rusty

It was a nice flat day and off to the X buoy we went. The small fish were biting good but the bigger ones were not. We left the buoy and went out to 26 miles and only found fresh floating objects not holding any fish. Back at the buoy, we caught a few more small aku and ahi then on in to the crab traps to look for a shark. We got to Waimea and found a small 20-foot Humpback Whale entangled in a crab trap float. It had the rope somehow caught on it's tail and was anchored. It was not a happy whale, it was having a hard time getting it's head up to breath. Scot jumped in and could see that he could cut the rope right next to the tail and it might untangle. So he got a knife and swam carefully up to the whale and cut the rope very close to the tail. The whale swam a short ways and the float came free and it dove out of sight, a happy whale once again. We never did see any sharks, but Russ did get to see one of the best humpback breaches we have seen in awhile. This whale jumped all the way out of the water 200 yards from the boat. In the harbor every one except Pam joined in the eyeball eating ritual, I like it. It was a good experience for all especially the whale. Aloha Capt. Rusty

The X buoy was our destination today partly due to the J and II buoys being missing now. On our first pass with the light tackle a mahi followed a small ahi we had on all the way to the boat and then grabbed the outrigger lure dangling beside the boat and hooked up. Then the 12 to15 pound ahi started biting and we caught 5 of them before it was time to go in. As we started to leave I spotted a big dorsal fin that belonged to a bull killer whale (Orca) there was a pod of them about 20 individuals. They came right by the boat several times and generally put on a great show for us. It was the first time we had ever seen them here. Aloha Capt. Rusty

It was a rough day with 25 mph trade winds, making for a bouncy ride, but the fish like that. On our way to the X buoy we caught a 15 pound mahi at 7 am to start the day right. At the X we caught small aku and ahi for bait then headed out to the deep. When we reached 27 miles we found a school of mahi and got one trolling, the birds broke up and flew out a ways, as we headed for them we took a double mahi and all of a sudden there were mahi coming in from everywhere. It was obvious that there was a floater in the area. We tossed out a marker flag and caught 7 on the way down hill. Then we came back up looking for the floater and got 3 more right before I spotted a nice big brown cargo net floating. We marked it with another flag (I have 4 flags aboard) and the game was on. Scot was doing a great job of baiting them up, one after another. Then a shark showed up and it got hard to get them to bite bait , so we trolled and caught one 12 pound ahi, and 4 small onos. By now it is 3 PM and time to go in. Our total was 40 mahi, 4 ono and one ahi, one hell of a fine catch. In the harbor Paul was ready to go when it came to the Eyeball eating ritual. Victor declined. It was dark so the photo doesn't show all the fish, but they were there all 500 pounds worth. Congratulations guys. Aloha Capt. Rusty
