Florida holds claim to some of the best fishing locations in the world; in fact, Florida has been labeled the Fishing Capitol of the World. This dubious honor attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year from around the USA and the world alike. Not only is the fishing superb, but the weather is fantastic. With the average temperature in the wintertime holding around 68 degrease, it creates the perfect conditions for some of the most notorious sub-tropical game fish.
One sub-tropical game fish that holds the interest of many inshore sport-fishing enthusiasts is the Snook. The Snook, commonly referred to as a line-sider, has to be one of the most difficult fish to catch. The Snook can be very finicky, defiant, moody and just down right nasty to any angler looking to catch him. Snook can range in size from the common 8-10 pound fish to the larger 30-40 pound fish. Although these fish are often sought after in Costa Rica, Cape Canaveral Florida holds some of the biggest brawling Snook in the entire United States.
Cape Canaveral is located on the East central coast of Florida, just south of the Kennedy Space Center. What makes Cape Canaveral so attractive to Snook is the structure, deep water, over abundance of bait and all the distinctive shadows that are created at night by the many lit areas around the port. Anglers are challenged on a regular basis, when conditions are right; to get these brawling beast away from the dreaded structure that Snook call home. The feeling that comes with landing one of these incredible fish is indescribable, and the table fare that they offer is unmatchable.
Although few anglers posses the skills necessary to land these powerful fish on fly, it can be done. Casting and fly presentation are not so much the issue, rather it is the ability to fight the fish. It takes at least an 11 WT fast action rod and true grit to pull these bad boys away from there home under water. As you can guess, Snook fishing is a true team sport. You can bet that catching a Snook of any size, especially one over 12 pounds, takes an experienced guide and one very determined angler.
If you ever have the chance to make it to Cape Canaveral Florida, don’t miss your opportunity to be humbled by a legendary Snook.
