Cool Cars That are Cheap and Safe
Safe Cars that You and Your Parents will Like
Find a 16 year old that doesn't want a car and something is wrong. Everyone wants a car - it makes you mobile, gets you out of the house, it will change your life. The number one question is what it is going to cost. If money is no object (read: mom and dad are loaded and willing to spend) then this article isn't for you. We'll do that story later. This is for those of us on a budget.
At HighSchoolDriver.com we are all about safety. All the cars in this article were selected first because they are safe, second because they are cool, and third because they are between $5,000 and $15,000.
We define safe as:
Four or five stars in *crash tests (more stars means lower chance of injury in crash tests).
Driver and passenger air bars mandatory (1998 or newer)
Antilock brakes - important for young drivers
*Test data provided by the NHTSA
(National Highway Transportation Safety Administration)
Crash Dummies
We searched through vehicle crash tests performed by the National Highway Safety Transportation Administration. These guys crash cars for a living. They rate the safety of cars based on your chance of injury in the front and rear seat. Cars that had four stars or more in both front and rear seat made our list. We then searched the Auto Trader for each of the cars to find the price ranges.
