As theses crab legs are smaller, you'll find they'll go a little farther and are good for serving large groups. Two pounds of king crab will serve 2 to 3 people easily if you're serving with additional entrees. If you're having a crab feast or are serving a group of crab lovers, 10 pounds would be good for 6 to 8 people.

Storing and Thawing

King crab arrives in the form of frozen legs and claws. Frozen king crab can be kept in a freezer for several months due to it's protective glaze. To thaw king crab, place it in the refrigerator a day prior to cooking it. Left-over king crab should be kept under refrigeration and used within a couple of days.

Norton Sound red king crab are smaller than their nearby cousins in Bristol Bay. There is an average of 25+ legs per 10 lbs. Even though they are smaller they are still filled with sweet "red" king crab. They're great for large groups or crab feasts.

Fishing Seasons

Norton Sound 's main red king crab fishery starts in July and last for several months. The winter fishery is of a different kind. With Norton Sound frozen over in the winter months, the fishery adjusts by leaving their frozen boats in the harbor and traveling out onto the ice in snow mobiles or other vehicles. They cut large holes in the ice, dropping pots down, and continue to fish for that prized king crab.
