Serving Sizes

A one pound package would be good for 2 to 3 people if serving with other entree additions. If serving as a "shrimp feast" then about twice this amount would suffice.

Buying, Storing and Thawing

When buying spot prawns make sure they feel firm and have no black spots. They should smell fresh, like the sea. Spot prawns can be thawed under refrigeration about 12 hours before preparation. Thawed prawns can be kept refrigerated in an air-tight container for 2 days. They can easily be stored in your freezer for several months.

Size and Count

Spot prawns vary in size and count. For medium spot prawns, there are 31 to 40 prawns per pound. For extra large spot shrimp there are under 16 to 20 prawns per pound. Our spot prawns are packaged in 3 lb boxes. They are headless and uncooked.

Spot prawns are the largest of the 5 species of shrimp found in Alaska's waters. They have distinctive white spots on the first and fifth abdominal segments. Large females can exceed 9 inches in total length.  Spot prawns change sex as they grow. They spend the first part of their lives as males, then change into females.

Fishing Seasons

Spot prawns are commercially harvested from April through October using traps that are dropped to the ocean's bottom. Spot shrimp are found in the northeastern Pacific Ocean from Unalaska Island, Alaska to San Diego, California.

Availability

Through commercial packaging and freezing, Spot prawns are available all year long. A large percentage of the commercial catch is frozen and exported to Japan, as it is considered a prized delicacy.
