Alaska halibut is by far America's favorite white fish. It's tender portions of delicate white meat and a delicious pure flavor makes halibut a popular fish at any dinner table. In fact, it's loved so much, there won't be any left-overs!

Halibut is very versatile in that kitchen. It is excellent broiled, baked, and certainly battered and deep-fried.

Halibut is also very healthy for you. It is an excellent source of high-quality protein and minerals, low in sodium, fat and calories.

Serving Sizes

An average serving size of halibut fillet would be one half pound. This would apply to both a fillet entree or other cooking methods such as battered halibut. Halibut steaks are usually served on a one per person basis, but at times, can be quite large and need to be split in two.

Storing and Thawing

Halibut fillets and steaks can be thawed under refrigeration about 12 hours before preparation. The vacuum-sealed packages can also be ran under cold water to speed this up considerably.

Portion Size

Our halibut fillets and steaks are fresh-frozen and individually vacuum-sealed in 1/2 to 1 1/2 pound packages. The fillets are boneless.

Halibut are among the largest fish in the sea and the largest of all the flatfish. They can grow to more than 8 ft long and 500 lbs.  The largest concentration of Alaska halibut is in the Gulf of Alaska, with most in the Kodiak Island area. A smaller amount exist in the Bering Sea.

Fishing Seasons

In 1995, Alaska halibut fishing switched to an individual vessel quota system which has increased the availability of fresh halibut to an 8 month annual span, while also increasing the quality of the halibut landed.

Availability

Alaska halibut is a large, almost annual fishery, making it available all year round. Fresh-frozen processing and glazing allows halibut to be kept frozen for long periods of time with insured quality and means of distribution. Fresh halibut can be commonly found in many local Alaskan fish markets and throughout the Northwest.
