Cervical cancer detection aid receives federal approval
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

WASHINGTON An optical device that can help identify areas on a woman's cervix that may contain precancerous cells has received federal approval.

The Food and Drug Administration says the Luma Cervical Imaging System may help doctors detect lesions not caught by a traditional evaluation of the cervix in women who have recently had an abnormal pap test.

It's being called and "additional tool" in the fight against the disease.

The Luma device, made by MediSpectra of Lexington, Massachusetts, is meant to be used with the more traditional test and not as a substitute. The F-D-A says a doctor will still have to perform a biopsy on areas on the cervix highlighted by the two procedures.

Cervical cancer is preventable and mostly afflicts women in developing countries.
