Military to investigate firefight that killed Iraqi civilians
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

PENTAGON The Pentagon is opening a criminal investigation into a firefight last November in which Iraqi civilians were caught in the crossfire.

Fifteen Iraqis, eight insurgents and a U-S Marine died after a roadside bomb exploded in Haditha (hah-DEE'-thuh), next to a joint patrol of U-S and Iraqi forces. Insurgents attacked with small arms fire, and the Marines fired back, hitting civilians in the process.

A military official says investigators will determine whether the Marines acted appropriately.

According to the official, who asked not to be named, concerns about the attack were first raised by a reporter. The official says a preliminary investigation has already been completed in Iraq and forwarded to the Navy Criminal Investigative Service.
