FBI says no federal charges will be filed in Emmett Till killing
Email to a Friend Printer Friendly Version

GREENWOOD, Miss. The F-B-I says that no federal civil rights charges are going to be filed in the 1955 killing of black teen in Mississippi.

A statement from the F-B-I says a five-year statute of limitations has expired.

The F-B-I has handed over its report from the reopened investigation to a district attorney, who will decide if any state charges should be filed.

Fourteen-year-old Emmett Till -- who was from Chicago and had been visiting his grandparents -- was tortured and killed, purportedly for whistling at a white woman. An all-white jury acquitted two white men who later confessed to the killing in a magazine interview. They have since died.
