"Mental Health Charity Warns of Consequences of Online Gambling"
Online gambling web sites may pose even greater threat to problem gamblers than casinos.
Mental health organizations are issuing warnings that the easy accessibility
of online gambling sites together with the anonymity of online gambling, may
pose a real danger to people with gambling addictions. Land-based casinos have
always been a serious threat to people with gambling addictions, and now online
poker sites and other gambling sites, have the potential of posing an even greater
threat to problem gamblers.
“It is essential that we do not overlook the serious harm that
online gambling can do to those people unable to control their gambling
habits, even though the investment potential of Internet gambling sites
is significant and attractive. Gambling addiction can lead to additional
emotional and psychological problems that affect not just the gambler,
but his family and friends.” Andrew McCulluch, Chief Executive of
the Mental Health Foundation, says, "Many people, including the young,
are gambling from the comfort of their own homes or from their workplace.
For some, even occasional gambling can turn into an addiction and lead
to problems. It is not just debt, but relationship breakdowns and problems
at work."
The Mental Health Foundation, a charity organization, has created new
online resources for people who may be experiencing problems with gambling.
They are deeply concerned that online gambling could create problems for
certain individuals and that these problems could lead to even greater
emotional problems with serious consequences. “Players become isolated
and avoid social contact with family members, friends and colleagues and
they lose interest in other activities. Compounded with financial worries,
the mental health implications are serious, and charities like the Mental
Health Foundation must offer support,” added McCulloch.
Anyone who feels that they are developing a gambling problem can visit the
Mental Health Foundation site at http://www.mentalhealth.org.uk to
obtain more information. The Mental Health Foundation is available for help
and support for anyone who feels they may have a problem with gambling or
for anyone who has a friend or family member that has a problem with gambling.
