Wilderness in the southeast of the US is in scarce supply. But we know of a place where you can have an isolated, wilderness adventure, in a convenient setting - the National Wild & Scenic Chattooga River.
Forming the natural border between Georgia and South Carolina, the Chattooga is flanked by two National Forests: Sumter National Forest in South Carolina and Chattahoochee National Forest in Georgia. The Chattooga is the most northern part of the Savannah River system. Within the river corridor, a ¼ mile boundary is protected under the National Wild & Scenic Act of 1974, limiting road access and preserving the wilderness aspect of the Chattooga and keeping the Chattooga free-flowing with no dams being erected to impede the natural ebb and flow of the river's water level. Rafting trips hike a ¼ mile into the river, and all trips are strictly regulated by the Forest Service regarding trip size and time frames, in various locations, to prevent trips from being in the same location at the same time, to preserve the wilderness experience and to minimize the impact on the area. Conveniently located within a 2hr. drive of Atlanta GA, Greenville SC and Asheville NC, the Chattooga is an easy destination for wilderness adventurers from anywhere in the world. Among the adventures to choose from are: The Mini trip, which is a half-day excursion in to the corridor and includes a snack on-river, is the perfect introduction to the wilderness experience. This trip is available for those adventurers age 8 and up. Section III, a full-day trip with on-river lunch, covers several miles of the milder, more scenic portion of the Wild & Scenic Chattooga. The trip will be on the water for approximately 5 hours, with the total trip time being 7 hours. This trip is available for adventurers age 10 and up. Section IV, a full-day trip with on-river lunch, covers the biggest water of the Chattooga, including the Five Falls. This trip is on the water for approximately 5 hours, with the total trip time being 7 hours. This trip is available for adventurers age 13 and up. The Overnighter combines the complete Chattooga River Section III (http://www.wildwaterrafting.com/chasec3.html) and Section IV (http://www.wildwaterrafting.com/chasec4.html) trip experience, with a night of camping in the National Forest, including a steak dinner and a hot breakfast. The Overnighter (http://www.wildwaterrafting.com/chaovernighter.html) is available to adventurers age 13 and up. Canoe and
Kayak Clinics are the most personal wilderness and whitewater
experience on the Chattooga. And a clinic is the perfect way to introduce
your child to interaction with the great outdoors and whitewater on
a very personal level.
