About Les Arcs, France
Les
Arcs is a wonderful, modern resort with great conditions for
skiing. Now linked to La Plagne, the "Paradiski" area. It offers
a massive 420 km of pistes, including the Aiguille Rouge glacier
with spectacular views of Mont Blanc, where the first and
best snow falls, and also the Bellecote glacier in La Plagne,
with guaranteed snow. The resort comprises four independent villages
at different heights: Arc 1800 is the largest village,
with a lively atmosphere and excellent access to the slopes.
Arc 2000 is popular with experienced skiers. Arc
1600 nestles below the other two and has a real village
atmosphere. Arc 1950 is the newest village, built
in a traditional style.
Les Arcs and La Plagne will now become one of the largest ski
areas in the world, as they are linked by the longest cable car
of this type ever built. The cabins will be large enough to attend
to 200 people and will cross the Ponthurin Vally in 4 only
minutes. After finalising this investment the village at Arc 1950
will be fully independent - with its own shops, restaurants, bars,
ski school, equipment shops, thermal spa, swimming pools and underground
parking.
Beginners and intermediates have really vast choice, with well
over 50 per cent of 120 pistes marked as blue or red. Advanced
skiers also won't be disappointed with lots of off-piste and challenging
black runs. Boarders have much to thank Les Arcs for, as it was
one of the first European resorts to encourage sport in the 1980s.
Worth noting is a special park, with a half-pipe,
jumps and boarder-cross course. Les Arcs is the
home of the "Ski Evolutif" teaching method and organises
an Olympic speed skiing course. This system - where you get longer
skis as you improve - is still used there today. The two satellite
villages of Villaroger Le Pre and Peisey Nancroix
are situated at opposite sides of the ski area with well-organised
connections. They are traditional villages whose economies are
equally based on skiing and farming. They both have a charming
French atmosphere. Apres ski is limited here to a few bars and
restaurants.
Most visitors supply themselves and benefit from traffic-free
streets. Unfortunately there aren't many non-ski activities on
the ground. The majority of shops, restaurants and clubs are located
in Arc 1800. Families will particularly like Les Arcs as the resort
gaining the highest grade from the Board of Tourism for its children's
facilities. However among this four villages of Les Arcs everyone
can find something interesting for themselves.
