MELODRAMA OPENS 2005 SEASON WITH A COMICAL “NIGHT ON THE TOWN!”
Victorian farce comes to the stage of The Great American Melodrama beginning January 21 as the Oceano company kicks off their 2005 season with Charles Hoyt’s “A Night on the Town.” Originally presented on Broadway in 1892, this ‘comic trifle’ has been adapted by director Eric Hoit to include classic songs of the period, among them “A Hot Time in the Old Town,” “The Bowery,” “After the Ball,” and “Ta-Ra-Ra Boom-De-Ay!”
Two young couples (played by Kevin Kiler, Barb E.S. Mercado, George Walker and Jane Noseworthy) wish to attend a masked ball, but Uncle Ben, their guardian (Jay Campbell), refuses to let them go. So the young people enlist the aid of Mrs. Guyer, a charming and vivacious widow (Suzy King), in plan to fool the old man. Before this scheme is even an hour old, complications arrive in the form of an old family friend, an oddly cheerful hypochondriac by the name of Welland Strong (Erik Stein). Naturally everyone ends up at the same restaurant, where a strange French waiter (Billy Breed) seems only to have chaos on the menu! Gorgeous costumes by Jim Tanner and authentic Victorian sets by Gary Adams offer a visual delight to frame the mayhem, music, mischief and merriment of this delightful comedy.
Following “A Night on the Town” at each performance, the Melodrama cast moves into the 20th century with “A Salute to Oscar’s Favorite Songs,” a musical revue celebrating Academy Award winning songs. Director John King, choreographer Michael Jenkinson and musical director Mark Wanless have crafted a revue that travels across musical styles (jazz, pop, western, disco) as it looks at 50 years of musical magic. Over a dozen songs are highlighted, from classy (“The Way You Look Tonight”) to classic (“Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head”), and from the sublime (“Somewhere Over the Rainbow”) to the ridiculous (“The Theme from Shaft”). Full of the song, dance and comedy the Melodrama is famous for, this revue has something for everyone!
“A Night on the Town” and “A Salute to Oscar’s Favorite Songs” play from January 21 through March 6. Performances are Thursdays at 7 pm, Fridays at 8 pm, Saturdays at 4:30 and 8:30 pm, and Sundays at 6 pm. The Melodrama’s in-house pub serves up great food and drinks before the show and during intermissions. Discounts for groups, seniors, students and children are available. For more information and reservations, call the Melodrama Box Office at 489-2499. The Great American Melodrama is located on Highway 1 in Oceano, just three miles south of Pismo Beach. The Melodrama has been providing professional family entertainment on the Central Coast since 1975.
