Update on Version 4.6

It has been buzzing with anticipation pending the next release of Mambo version 4.6. Late last week, Chad Auld from the Mambo Core Development team release an update on the progress of the release.

"The Mambo team has been busy putting the final touches on 4.6. While we don't have every little detail worked out just yet we do feel it is quite stable. We are now targeting Monday (6th March 2006)as the day for the first Public Release Candidate (4.6 RC1).

We want to give you guys (our community) some time to test drive the release and report back any issues before we seal it up and call it good.

The Public RC1 will be available on "The Source"  for download. We will most likely give the community two weeks from Monday to report any issues. We'll do our best to take care of them and turn out a solid release shortly thereafter. A ton of work has gone into this release and I am getting really excited to see it hit the streets."

Update on the Mare.D worm and Mambo
Written by Martin Brampton

altThere is huge publicity about the Mare.D Linux worm and Mambo on the internet at present. It is not clear how this story started. The only security company to have recorded anything is F-Secure and nobody has been able to contact them for additional information.

This was picked up in a VNUNET story that has been repeatedly copied, more or less verbatim. There is talk of the Mare.D worm and vulnerabilities in XML-RPC and Mambo. But the references to Secunia advisories on these two products are to items dated 29 June 2005 and 21 February 2005 respectively. Both products have been updated since then. Mare.D is also described as having aliases such as such as Linux.Plupii.C, Unix/ShellBot.C which are old worms.

So it is not clear that anything new has happened at all. Maybe this is a hoax, for whatever reason, maybe somebody doesn't know the difference between 2005 and 2006. Please spread this information wherever you can.

You are strongly advised to keep up with security advice from the Mambo team - join the mailing list if you want to be notified of any security news.
