Lake Titicaca Puno Information

Titicaca Lake and Puno should be on you short list of your Peru vacation. Puno is the main entrance to Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. The Climate is pleasant with a lot of sunny days. It is located at 3827 meters above sea level. Distance from Lima is 1303 kilometers.

Puno is one of the few Andean departments in Peru that possesses a plain surface. The greater part of its territory is located on an average of 3850 meters above sea level. In these regions you will be able to see peaks of snow-covered mountains and be enchanted by the panorama where Alpacas and Vicuñas inhabit.

Puno is, after Loreto and Cuzco, the third department of Peru in the level of surface extension. 9 Providences are fully dedicated to cattle and farming. The watershed of Titicaca has three large rivers: the Ramis, el Coata and the LLave. The Ramis is the most extensive one and collects an area close to 13000 square kilometers.

Lake Titicaca

Titicaca Lake is located on the Highland plain of Collao enclosed between the mountain ranges of occident Andean that comes from Chile and the oriental. This takes place in the junction between Peru and Bolivia, an imaginary line that crosses the lake from Southwest and Northeast and serves as a boundary between the two countries.

Titicaca Lake has an extension of 8,300 square kilometers of area, making it the largest lake of South America. The length of Lake Titicaca is 194 kilometers It's width is 65 kilometers. Depth oscillates from 20 meters to 256 meters in the area of Island de Soto on the east part of the lake. The level of water of Titicaca Lake fluctuates quite a bit. This depends on the rainy seasons of the year or dry weather conditions of the region, varying its level between 80 centimeters to one meter twenty. The water is crystal clear and clean. The temperature of the water is around 12º centigrade.

Islands Titicaca Lake

Titicaca Lake has more than 41 islands. The most important once are: Estevez, Amantani, Taquila, Riveros, Soto and Isla del sol. The lake also has 4 peninsulas. The fauna is abundant. In its shores and on the coasts exist a variety of birds such as the flamencos and colored herons, known for their colorful feathers and features.
