The Tarantella
The Tarantella is definitely the dance which represents the City most, it's said that it was created by Grazie to seduce Ulysses, just after he'd escaped from the song of the Sirens. It's enjoyed by two; a man and a woman, who simulate a scuffle between lovers whilst the crowd participates by dancing, singing and playing guitars, tambourines and obviously the castanets. This dance, full of light heartedness and blessings, like all Neapolitan dances, is characteristic for its anonymity and choral dimensions; everyone joins in the melody, gestures, shouts and colourful participation.

Feast and procession of the Madonna dell'Arco

The Feast of the Madonna dell'Arco is held yearly at Sant'Anastasia, a small town at the foot of Vesuvius, to remember and celebrate the miracle that came about in the 16th Century, when a nervous croquet player hit a ball which struck the image of the Madonna. From that moment on, the statue began to bleed. For all the centuries following that incident, on Easter Monday, the devoted, nicknamed the "Fujenti," that is the escapees of the Madonna, walk nude in the streets asking for alms or charity.

The image of the Madonna is carried in procession, amongst the shouting and almost ecstatic crowd.
