Introduction

The Met Office is a well respected authority and members of NWP Division play an active role in promoting and advancing new ideas and work within the international meteorological community. Papers written by members of the Division are regularly published in journals and the Division is often represented at international conferences.

NWP Division sponsored meetings

1996: NWP-Isaac Newton Institute Program

During 1996 NWP Division sponsored a study programme at the Isaac Newton Institute, a mathematics research institute based at Cambridge University. The aim of this programme was for mathematicians to gain a greater understanding of meteorology and oceanography and for meteorologists and oceanographers to gain a greater understanding of mathematics.

The programme consisted of a series of workshops and discussions on a number of topics and was attended by about 60 participants visiting for varying periods of time. One workshop was on variational data assimilation which led to an international data assimilation intercomparsion exercise.

2000: Mesoscale Variational Data Assimilation Workshop

In 2000 NWP Division hosted a workshop on mesoscale variational assimilation at the Met Office College at Shinfield, Reading, Berkshire. The abstracts and workshop reports from the meeting are available for viewing.

2004: SRNWP/Met Office HirLAM Workshop November 15 to 17
