Twin Cities Team Club
March 5th 2006
Grand Bayou, Coushatta La.

The TCTC fished the March Tournament at the Grand.  Nineteen teams were in participation at the end of the day with a few that had arrived late.

Take off was around 6:10 am with a clear sky that was beginning to cloud up by mid-morning.  Temps that morning were in the lower 50's and climbing to the upper 70's by the end of the day.  Water temps ranged from 57-65 degrees and had a stain over most of the lake.  Winds picked up a little as the day wore on out of the east southeast.
As the anglers started the weigh-in the weights looked to be pretty good with several hawgs being brought to the scales.  Anglers reported seeing bass on beds, but had not commited to the spawn yet as they were really "spooky".
Coming in 3rd place and having the Big Bass of the day were the team of Jerry Titus and Johnny Sparrow with a total weight of 11.99 lbs, and the big fish equaling 7.62 lbs.  Jerry reported catching his fish on a red Rat-L-Trap on points and coves.
Bringing in a total of 13.20 lbs of fish was the team of Earnie (Papa) and Trey Cella.  The Cella's reported catching their fish on a combination of Spinnerbaits, Rogue's, Cinko's, Lizards, and Swimbaits on shallow flats with grass.
The winning team of George Perez and Matt Wright brought a weight of an impressive 17.89 lbs to the scales.  Their fish were caught on a combination of C-Rigged watermelon candy Cinko's and WarEagle Spinnerbaits.  George Stated they were fishing in 6 ft of water casting up onto 3 foot of water and working the baits back to the boat.
Congratulations go to all that placed.  A special congratulations goes out to George on his win.  George announced that he will be deployed to Iraq on may 1st for a year's tour of duty.  George will be missed deeply by the TCTC.  Good Luck and God's speed on your return.
At the conclusion of the weigh-in, some issues were brought to the attention of the members by President James Teer.  First at issue was the use (or lack of) running lights at take off.  With the TCTC growing in size, all the members need to realize that safety is a top concern.  We don't want to start off a tournament in a bad way guys.  Second was the voting on the Ultimatebass boards.  All teams need to vote on the tournaments or at the very least let James know who is fishing.  The TCTC conducts 99% of its business on Ultimatebass, so go to your computer guys and keep up with the happenings.  Voting for April is on-going right now…..Vote you convictions…

Bass Fishing Report Lake Fork

This week at Lake Fork has been fair for both size and numbers.  We had a few fish over 7 lbs but none over 8, with numbers averaging 15 to 20 bass for a full day.  I have found two different patterns to choose from.  For numbers of smaller fish, shallow wood and grass cover early and late and schooling bass during the day are your best option.  For big fish, deep diving crankbaits for suspended bass and bass relating to mid-depth structure (10’-18’) and TX or Carolina rigs fished methodically through heavy cover are the best option, although your numbers will usually lower.  I’ve mainly concentrated on the bigger fish, so my report will cover that pattern.  Beware; these big bass are hitting hard enough to rip the rods out of your hands (see below).

Again this week, we had numerous storms in the area but the lake didn’t receive much rain.  The water level has continued to slowly drop, currently sitting at 401.12’, about 1’11" below full pool.  The water remains a stained green color, due to continued algae blooms.  Water temps remain in the upper 80s to low 90s.

The location pattern has stayed the same, although many of the big fish have been suspending instead of holding on the bottom.  Many bass are still relating to humps, ridges and points outside spawning bays while others are camped on traditional summertime haunts that are well offshore.  With the thermocline effectively creating a deep boundary for the bass at about 28’, I’m concentrating on structure that is 10’ to 28’ deep.  Timber, whether it is standing, submerged, or in brush piles, has been the key cover.
