Chum Salmon (dog)

Alaska fishing for chum salmon

Alaska Chum salmon from SewardChum salmon returns to Northern Kenai Peninsula streams are minimal and do not support a significant sport fishery. They are numerous on the East part of the peninsula. Sport fishermen generally capture chum salmon incidental to fishing for other Pacific salmon species. Statewide sport harvest usually totals fewer than 25,000 chums. In Alaska, chum are an important year-round source of fresh and dried fish for subsistence and personal use. After entering fresh water, chums are most often prepared as a smoked product.

Average Size and Record

  • Chums average about 10 to 12 lbs.
  • The record chum was 32 lbs., Caamano Point, 1985
