Jeff Campbell

Jeff Campbell first began working for Lonely Planet's US office as a freelance editor in 1993. He started writing for Lonely Planet in 2000, when he shared his vast knowledge of gambling and other sinful pursuits as a contributor to the first edition of Las Vegas. Since then he has been the coordinating author for Southwest, Zion & Bryce Canyon National Parks and USA. He is proud to note that the third edition of USA won the Society of American Travel Writers Lowell Thomas silver award for Best Guidebook in 2004.

Jeff began traveling after his sophomore year in college, when it suddenly dawned on him he'd have to get a real job one day and so he fled to Europe. After a year of waiting tables in London and windsurfing in Greece, he reluctantly returned to the USA to finish his studies in the hopes of never having to call an office cubicle home. In this, he's been mostly successful as a freelance writer and editor, while continuing to feed his travel jones – he's returned to Europe several times and made numerous treks around and across America.

If he were forced to choose, he'd have to say his two favorite places are Alaska and the Southwest desert – landscapes don't get much more epic or surreal. Since 1989, Jeff has called San Francisco home, one that he is grateful to share with his wife, Deanna, and two children, Jackson and Miranda.

Travel tip: A great way to meet people and get the inside scoop on a new place is to eat dinner at a restaurant bar. You'll invariably end up in conversation with your barmates and the bartender, and they'll all be eager to point you to the best places.
