These areas include such diverse places as Death Valley, Tehachapi and the Palmdale, Edwards Air Force areas. Freezing in winter and blistering hot in summer, the vast California high deserts or ‘chapparal country’ are a powerful attraction for many visitors because of the stark beauty, near total desolation and eerie silence. Considerable care must be taken when traveling through these desert areas, especially Death Valley because food, water and emergency assistance may not be available for days at a time.
