Re-examining lipid concentrations

Cretan sample Seven Countries Cohort

International Conference
Traditional Mediterranean Diet: Past, Present and Future
Athens, 21 - 23 April 2004

Biochemical and haematological data comparisons between the seven countries cohort of Crete and a cohort of younger men

During the summer of 2000, 129 surviving members (aged 80-96) of Cretan sample Seven Countries Cohort (7CC) and 81 men fellow villagers (age 43-64) were re-examined.

Lipid concentrations were estimated, using a Hitachi 911 auto-analyser, in three independent laboratories, all situated in The Netherlands.

Glucose, creatinine, total free fatty acids, uric acid, C-reactive protein, iron, ferritin, total antioxidant status, unsaturated iron binding capacity of transferrin, transferrin concentrations, hyderoperoxides, Apo A1 & B, haemoglobin, serum paraoxanase, serum vitamin B12, serum folic acid, homocysteine and NTB iron were estimated using an autoanalyser (Hitachi 912) at the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment, Bilthoven.

Highly significant differences (p<0.0001) were observed between the two Cretan cohorts in the average serum cholesterol concentration (7CC mean 5.0, s.d. 1.0 mmol/L c.f. MC mean 6.2, s.d. 1.4 mmol/L), LDL concentration (7CC mean 3.3, s.d. 0.8 mmol/L c.f. MC mean 4.1, s.d.1.0 mmol/L), iron concentration (7CC mean 14.6, s.d. 6.6 mmol/L c.f. MC mean 20.7, s.d. 7.0 µmol/L), ferritin (7CC mean 112.8, s.d. 168.5 µg/L c.f. MC mean 141.7, s.d. 108.7 µg/L), Apo B (7CC mean 1.06, s.d. 0.22 g/L c.f. MC mean 1.29, s.d. 0.24 g/L), serum vitamin B12 (7CC mean 376.8, s.d. 165.5 pg/mL c.f. MC mean 474.5, s.d. 146.4 pg/mL), homocysteine (7CC mean 26.0, s.d. 11.0 µmol/L c.f. MC mean 14.7, s.d. 4.6 µmol/L), NTB iron (7CC mean 0.75, s.d. 0.69 µM c.f. MC mean 1.31, s.d. 0.72 µM) and transferrin concentration (7CC mean 2.61, s.d. 0.5 g/L c.f. MC mean 2.88, s.d. 0.4 g/L. There was no evidence of a difference in the average HDL concentrations between younger and older men.
