San Larenço
Premier Golf Course Rating
Still number 5 in Europe, a must if you can get to play. Restricted to Don Philipe Hotel Guests, if they have spare times you can play.
18th Hole

San Lorenço, still ranked number 5 in Europe

Set in the Ria Formosa nature reserve, this course is well maintained and the location is very spectacular. But this spectacular setting does not enhance the course as far as golf is concerned. To play San Lorenço you have to stay in their hotel in Vale do Lobo, or turn up on the day and take your luck, sorry.

This course is laid out on the same charismatic lines as Pinheiros Altos and Quinta do Lago, with the opening holes designed along the typical Algarve courses. The 6th hole is the stroke index 1, from the tee you look out to the ocean don't be put off this hole needs all the concentration you can muster. A dogleg left, once past the dog leg the fairway is protected by the sea to the left. The green juts out into the ocean making a difficult approach. The 8th hole I think should be the stroke index one, this hole is a par 5 and it will take all your skills to make the green in regulation. Water down the right and out of bounds on the left, with a good drive you may reach the lake but if you play to short you have bunkers to contend with. The approach shot has to be accurate as this green has water in front, once on you can relax with the putt.

This course is all about the last 2 holes, with the last probably one of the best in the Algarve. From the tee you are confronted with water left and in front, a good drive is essential to a very narrow fairway, your second needs to be hit well if you are to reach the green in two. Do not be fooled by the green it almost looks as if it rests up against a bank, over this left side is water and in front a bunker lurks. Some pro's drive off over the lake to the left side of the green into a large bank of grass, this is a pro's way do not try it unless you can catty a ball from your drive almost 270 meters.
