Oak Island Community Watch is part of a comprehensive Crime Prevention program aimed at reducing crime in our community. It is designed to help keep you informed of criminal activity throughout Oak Island and to give you a chance to make a difference. Oak Island Community Watch also provides safety and crime prevention tips throughout the year.

Oak Island Community Watch operates on the concept that effective crime prevention requires citizen cooperation with law enforcement and “neighbors helping neighbors.” It is made possible by citizens who are concerned about the neighborhood and are willing to become involved in the improvement of their community. It is only by working together that we can truly be effective for a safer community.

Please report all suspicious-looking vehicles and individuals to the Oak Island Police Department at 278-5595 If it turns out to be nothing, That’s OK; the police would rather have dozens of such reports than miss the report that leads to the apprehension of a criminal. Feel free to call whenever you see anything suspicious, and most importantly, call promptly—don’t wait!

Community Watch Security Tips

- Make Your House Look Occupied
- Leave some lights and a radio on when you are out.
- Lock Your Doors, Never leave your house open for “just a moment,” always lock your doors when you are out.
- Use Deadbolt Locks, A deadlock lock is a good deterrent to burglars.
- Don’t Hide A Key Outside, Burglars know all the secret hiding places.
- Drill And Pin Your Windows, Window locks can be jimmied; pins cannot.
- Brace Sliding Glass Windows, If the door is braced, the only way a burglar can get through it is to break it.
- Install Good Exterior Lighting, Motion sensor lights and other good lights don't let a burglar hide in the dark.
- Keep Bushes And Shrubs Trimmed, If bushes are too high, someone hiding near your windows and doors cannot be seen.
- Stop Mail And Paper Deliveries, If you go on vacation, stop deliveries or have one of your neighbors collect your mail and papers.
- Get a Dog, Even a small dog may be a deterrent to a burglar.
- Install An Alarm System, Burglars avoid houses with alarms.
