Enrollment in Online Classes, Degree Programs, Continues to Explode

The advantages of the Internet to deliver courses any where has led to student enrollment in online classes to double in the past three years.

The Sloan Consortium has reported that 2.6 million students studied online during the fall of 2004. Though the figures for 2005 have yet to be released, the continued growth gives rise to an estimate of 3.5 million students for the spring of 2005.

In addition, World Wide Learn, the world's largest directory of educational services, has indicated that the number of people seeking degrees online has also grown steadily. The enrollment of students seeking Associate, Master's and Bachelor degrees online is roughly ten times the projected rate set forth by the National Center for Education Statistics for the general post-secondary student population. World Wide Learn lists the fastest growing online education degree fields as Web Design and Development, Accounting and Finance, and Early Childhood Development.

WWL also indicated that the number of people seeking bachelor's degrees has grown more consistently than the number seeking Master's degrees. However, World Wide Learn pointed to a sharp increase in Master's degree-related traffic on their website during January of 2006. The heaviest traffic has come from those interested in MBA programs and in Master's degree options in IT disciplines.
