Educational report casts concern about future of U.S.

It is the basic tenet of the American Dream. Each subsequent generation acquires greater educational stature than that of their parents and with that stature comes greater income than that of the prior generation.

However, startling numbers regarding Hispanics and blacks, two of the focal points of President Bush’s No Child Left Behind Act, reveal a country that risks being less educated in the future than the past. According to the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education, fewer blacks and Hispanics are earning high-school and college diplomas than whites, a fact that causes America to risk becoming both less-educated and poorer over the next several years.

With the U.S. workforce increasing in diversity, the performance of minorities is particularly important. The going trend in America is that one of every three workers will be a member of the minority by 2020. That ratio contrasts to minorities making up less than one sixth of the work force in 1980.

The report reveals that only half of African-American and Hispanic ninth-graders are eligible to enter college after four years. The reason is very simple, those youngsters have either dropped out or still have not completed high school.

That failure to attain a high school or collegiate diploma translates to significant financial impacts for the country. If the educational gaps between whites and minorities could be erased, experts predict an increase of $805 billion in U.S. personal income. If the country continues at status quo, those same experts predict a $395 billion decrease.
