Majority of employers more accepting of online degrees

In a sign that the online educational movement is continuing to gain credibility, career publisher Vault Inc.'s recent survey results indicate that employers are becoming more and more comfortable with hiring employees that have earned their credentials online.

Vault's 2005 Online Degrees Survey, conducted earlier this month with employers from a variety of industries across the U.S., stated that 85 percent of employers feel that online degrees are more acceptable in the workplace today than they were just five years ago. A little more than a third of the survey participants (34%) indicated they had encountered a job applicant with an online degree while 20% said they have hired applicants with online credentials.

However, most employers still indicated a preference for job applicants with traditional degrees over those with online degrees. But though 54 percent stated they favored traditional degrees, 45 percent said they would give job candidates with either type of degree full consideration. Perhaps most telling was that 91% of respondents indicated that if they found a candidate that had the skills the company was looking for, they would hire that candidate even if he/she only possessed an online degree.

The one negative for online degree earners involved the potential scenario of earning credentials only through online studies. Whereas the vast majority of employers (86%) would be willing to accept a job applicant with an online degree, 14% of the respondents indicated that a worker with both an online bachelors degree and an online graduate degree would not be acceptable.
