Towson University Expanding Online Offerings
If new Provost James Brennan has his way, Towson University students will soon be able to complete online degree programs entirely over the web.
Over the next several years, the University hopes to increase enrollment by making programming available to online students. The goal will be to steadily add more courses yearly so that within the next five to ten years, some students may actually complete their programs entirely online.
Like many such universities, Towson will collaborate with a sister college to greatly enhance offerings. The school plans to pilot programs with the University of Maryland using a technology education product called WebTycho.
The University of Maryland University College, or UMUC, is an open university that focuses on the nontraditional student, providing several distance learning programs as part of its course offerings. By collaborating with UMUC, Towson will be able to greatly enhance its online degree course offerings immediately.
In courses offered via WebTycho, all course work is done entirely through the web. To participate in such a class, students simply need a computer, internet access and an e-mail account.
Towson University, eight miles north of downtown Baltimore, is Maryland’s second largest university. The school currently enrolls more than 16,000 students and offers 88 undergraduate and graduate programs as part of its traditional educational program.
