Stating that it was simply offering housing analogous to what students choose to do when they move off campus, Macalester College in St. Paul, MN, now allows upperclassmen to live in apartment-style housing to select their roommates irrespective of gender.

Under what is referred to as a gender-open system, the policy allows men and women to live together in two or three bedroom suites that share a bathroom and kitchen. According to Jim Hoppe, associate dean of students, the housing changes at Macalester merely mirror the trend at other liberal arts colleges. Hoppe named Carleton College in Northfield, Beloit and Lawrence Colleges in Wisconsin, and Grinnell in Iowa as offering similar type housing options for students.

Macalester College, a privately supported coeducational liberal arts college, was founded in 1874. The college prides itself on an undergraduate education characterized by four historic values: academic excellence, international perspectives in academic work and the life of the college, a diverse academic community and civic engagement as an integral part of learning and life. The small school lists 1865 students from all 50 states and 80 countries.

Two years ago, the school drew fire over a proposal that would allow males and females to share campus dorm rooms. The new on-campus apartment suite housing option is open to all juniors and seniors.
