Digital Fortress : A Thriller
by Authors:
Dan Brown
Hardcover Description:
In most thrillers, "hardware" consists of big guns, airplanes, military vehicles, and weapons that make things explode. Dan Brown has written a thriller for those of us who like our hardware with disc drives and who rate our heroes by big brainpower rather than big firepower. It's an Internet user's spy novel where the good guys and bad guys struggle over secrets somewhat more intellectual than just where the secret formula is hidden--they have to gain understanding of what the secret formula actually is.
In this case, the secret formula is a new means of encryption, capable of changing the balance of international power. Part of the fun is that the book takes the reader along into an understanding of encryption technologies. You'll find yourself better understanding the political battles over such real-life technologies as the Clipper Chip and PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) software even though the book looks at the issues through the eyes of fiction.
Although there's enough globehopping in this book for James Bond, the real battleground is cyberspace, because that's where the "bomb" (or rather, the new encryption algorithm) will explode. Yes, there are a few flaws in the plot if you look too closely, but the cleverness and the sheer fun of it all more than make up for them. There are enough twists and turns to keep you guessing and a lot of high, gee-whiz-level information about encryption, code breaking, and the role they play in international politics. Set aside the whole afternoon and evening for it and have finger food on hand for supper--you may want to read this one straight through.
My opinion of this book coincides with the title of the novel I just read from the same author The Deception Point.
First, it seems to me that he uses the same template for those two novels: brilliant women whose boss if a kind of father for her, ... (refrained to add more similarities to avoid spoilers)
Second, I first thought that Dan Brown had never visited Spain but to my astonishment I just read that he studied art in Seville ... I hope that at least he learnt some art ... communion at the beginning of the ceremony, people saluting with three kisses, strawberry a typical drink, A Guardia Civil acting as an ambulance on his bike, third world medical infrastructures ...???
I only finished reading the book so that no one could about criticizing something I have not finished.
Not recommended at all!!

It's the second and last book written by dan brown that i have read. First of all it's a dull book nothing to do with the one-we-are-all-thinking-about. But as a spaniard I feel ashamed about his ignorance. I believe dan brown has had bad experiences while studying in seville but i experienced a feeling of setting the action during the Civil War(1936). As a qualified nurse I work in one of the top five health services in the world and even dan brown's characters should be happy of being given medical attention in my country. I love America but, talking about medical assistance you don't have nothing to do but trying to imitate our ovewhelming health service

I`m totally agree, BOYCOTT DAN BROWN!!!
If he wants to write a fiction book , ok, but in a fiction place. If not, please, take a little time to investigate about the country, is the minimun that the reader expect,or even you can visit Spain and see how wrong you were.

Well, i really admire this author, i have read all his books so far and he seemed to have good sources and investigate at least a lil bit before he started writing. but hey, i come from spain, and i think this guy has never been to spain!!!! thanks so much for making my country look like an undeveloped country where all the hospitals are dirty and many other things i dont even want to reproduce. he even says this isnt america, here there are no rules. I know it is fiction but MAN!!!! it is no good when you make fiction out of real places and make them look like that. And the worse thing is that i dont even think he believes it fiction, he probably thinks we are like that in spain, i feel sorry about his ignorance, and I hope he gets the opportunity to come to spain and see how wonderful and well developed this country is. please dan, dont insult a whole nation like that, you should apologize. BOYCOTT DAN BROWN IN SPAIN!!!!!

Greetings. I'm from Spain. Dan Brown really screwed it in this one. He shows you can get best-sellers even making mistakes about math, history, religion, etc. This kind of mistakes can be uncovered only by people with some culture. But the depiction of Spain is simply said, PATHETIC. It shows he dares to write a book and sell it, not caring at all about the truth of his statements. Has he ever been in Spain? No way. The truth about Spain is known by the millions of tourist who visit us every year, being the third most visited country in the world, right after the US and France. And you know what? They repeat. I guess they don't find the country he writes about.
So, Mr Brown, you just screwed it big time, and now everybody knows how you are able to add spice---lie when writing a book. For me and 40 million of spaniards, you and your books don't exist any longer.

A totally absorbing story
I found this book to be an excellent thriller - and didn't want to put it down - really exciting.
Dan Brown Has Done It Again!
This book is a great book! From the moment I picked it up I couldn't put it down until I was done. Dan Brown, Author of The Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons (Also a great book) and Deception Point, has shown again that he has the ability to truly hook me on a book. Dan Brown's style of writing is great; he can turn a complicated plot and lets everyone understand it. This book is in the classic Dan Brown style of switching characters that always makes you read the next chapter.
When you look at the cover of Digital Fortress its seems cryptic and confusing but I guess its true what they say you really cant judge a book by its cover. The truest sign of a great writer is when I am reading a book and I look at the clock to see it's two in the morning! Even if you don't like Dan Brown's specific style of writing this book is very different from The Da Vinci Code. As with all of Dan Brown's Novels he provides a truly brilliant blend of fact and fiction, this provides you with a sense that you are actually learning something from this novel. Who would of thought that I could be so interested while learning!
Whether or not you like mystery or The Da Vinci Code this book has a bit for everyone from the math nerd to the curious sleuth, this is ultimately one of Dan Browns finest and a great book whether your looking for a quick read, a terrifying thriller or a cryptic mystery this book is for you.
"Do I f*cking look like I'm kidding?!"
Digital Fortress is a very great thriller from the genius Dan Brown. It came before DaVinci code, and it is his first novel.
DF is about a group of people who find a code that the NSA's codebreaking machine cna't break. They find out that it is a $9, 999,999,999 code. They go to spain and try to break it with infor from lots of people.
great book!better than Angels And Demons.
So read it!
