Average Customer Rating:

There are few books that top this...

and I have read hundreds. I think everyone above me has probably filled in the details, but I'd just like to offer my support of this wonderful novel.

Search for meaning... finding perspective.

Ultimately this is a novel about perspective and how things that seem intensely odd to one person, have a perfectly logical reason for being when viewed by the person they are intended for. It takes awhile to catch on to this notion.

There are rough spots, and I lost track of who was saying what more than a few times, but generally it simple takes a quick reread to get back on track... generally.

Mainly told from the narrative voice of one extremely precocious 9 year old boy. At times he is so precocious that one loses touch with the book, and the reader is inclined to be aware of the fact that these are words coming from an adult and put into the mind of said 9 year old.

Despite these problems, I've given the book 5 stars. It may be more like a 4 star book in fact, but the whole project is so wonderfully creative, and this includes visually (which most novels ignore entirely), that one can't help but call it a 5 star book.

This is an urban adventure story where the characters try to cope with grief and loss (some recent, some decades old), and of course in the end discover themselves. That is quite predicable, how the author gets us to that point is anything but predicable.

Great Modern Novel

This is the first book I have read that deals sensitively and honestly with 9/11. The protagonist, Oskar, is a young boy looking for the lock for a key he found after his father's death in the World Trade Center. Foer's narrative style is compellingly rich, weaving Oskar's childishly wise voice with the voices of his grandmother and grandfather who lived through the Dresden bombings. I chose this book for my book club, and we all really enjoyed it. I'd highly recommend this book to any reader.
