The year was 1974. The look on the tennis courts was white, white, white. Tennis had a great following globally all over the world. Yet fashion in tennis was stagnant and anyone could find herself wearing redundant tennis apparel.
Cheryl Singer, Co-President of Tail, was a young mother of three and one of a growing group of lady recreational players who did not find the fashion of the times satisfying So she created her own version of a tennis skirt which launched Tail tennis clothing.
A little blue denim number dotted with distinctive red hearts that gave colorful new meaning to the term "tennis whites". Cheryl got complimented every time she wore her skirt and soon recognized an opportunity that since no one was making denim skirt, she would like to make one.
Andy Varat her brother co-founded Tail. With his background in fine arts and design and his fashion savvy and business sense they launched the company.
They were at the right place and the right time business-wise in starting Tail Tennis and its famous Tail tennis clothing. Tail tennis has brought to the world of tennis fashion more excitement. Wearing Tail tennis apparel put a lot of players at ease as far as tennis fashion was concerned.
A line of women's golf wear was introduced in 1977 and immediately became successful. Today, years after Cheryl's skirt made its courtside debut, Tail is nationally recognized as one of the top three manufacturers of tennis and golf apparel. In 3 decades, Tail tennis clothing line has certainly made it big.
The denim skirt can be found encased in glass and enshrined forever on a wall in the company's headquarters. It receives the kind of reverence usually reserved for relics. "We never forget where we came from, " say Andy and Cheryl, "that way, we have a greater sense of who we are and where we are going."
The Tail tennis clothing can be found in more than 2,800 golf and tennis specialty shops and resort pro shops across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The company employs 180 people in their corporate offices and factories in Miami and 35 sales representatives across the country.
