From a Buick 8
by Authors: Stephen King

Mass Market Paperback
Description: Stephen King, an evil car, and a teenage boy coming to terms with the fragility and randomness of life.... Wait, haven't we read this before? Diehard King fans, worry not. Aside from the titular car playing a main role in the story, From a Buick 8 could not be less like King's 1983 masterpiece, Christine. If anything, this story resembles King's serial novel The Green Mile, with reminiscing police characters flashing back on bizarre events that took place decades earlier.

The book's intriguing plot revolves around the troopers of Pennsylvania State Patrol Troop D, who come into possession of what at first appears to be a vintage automobile. Closer inspection and experimentation conducted by the troopers reveal that this car's doors (and trunk) sometimes open to another dimension populated by gross-out creatures straight out of ... well, a Stephen King novel. As the plot progresses, the veteran troopers' tales of these visits from interdimensional nasties, and the occasional "lightquakes" put on by the car, are passed on to the son of a fallen comrade whose fascination with the car bordered on dangerous obsession.

Unlike earlier King works, there is no active threat here; no monster is stalking the heroes of the story, unless you count the characters' own curiosity. In past books, King has terrorized readers with vampires, werewolves, a killer clown, ghosts, and aliens, but this time around, the bogeyman is a more passive, cerebral threat, and one for which they don't make a ready-to-wear Halloween costume--man's fascination with and fear of the unknown. While some readers may find this tale less exciting than the horror master's earlier works, From a Buick 8 is a wonderful example of how much King's plotting skills and literary finesse have matured over his long career. And, most of all, it's a darn creepy book. --Benjamin Reese

Average Customer Rating:

A portal to the horror

My personal story with the King novels started with Green Mile. I was hooked inmediatly to the story and the writing style. I was lookng for a King's novel and I didn't knew where to start. Well, Green Mile was the chosen one. The sepecial thing about KIng's style is that the horror wasn't in blood, murders or any gory subject. All is about fear for what is different, for what we can't explain.

I can see there's a lot of negative commentaries about this book. Some people say Stephen has soften his style, other say that the book is too long and so on. To me is one of the best novels he has written. I carried the book everywhere and I "devoured" within a few weeks. It really gave me the creeps, I had nightmares (and I have seen a lot of extreme gory films) My only epxlanation is something I've already say: We all fear what is unknown and beyond the realms of science (The horrible creatures spitted by the car, the climate changes, the lighting sparkles and the people disappearances)

Give the book a chance and convince yourself, this is a great Stephen King novel!

Mr. King - You Can Do Better!!!

As much as I like Stephen King's books, they sometimes can be hit or miss. In this case I think he missed the mark, although there were some parts of the book I really liked. Let me cover the basic plot first: State troopers from Pennsylvania discover a Buick 8 that isn't really a Buick 8 but something from another dimension or planet. King uses flashback narrative to tell the experiences the troopers have had with the car.

The biggest issue I had with the book is nothing much happens until the last couple chapters. Let me give an example of how most chapters are structured:

Typical End of a Chapter: "The thing that had come out of the trunk of that Buick caused the troopers to have nightmares for many years afterward. However, it was nothing compared to what happened next with the Buick..."

Next Chapter: "A Giant Bat Emerged from the Trunk!!! The image was burned into the troopers' memories for many years, but the most horrifying thing was yet to occur..."

Next Chapter: "A Weird Fish Appeared in the Trunk!!! As much as the troopers tried to erase that horrible image from their minds, none of them could ever forget. However, the worse was yet to happen..."

And so on thoughout the book. Only the last few chapters are really scary because something happens in the present with the Buick and the troopers lives are in danger. I wish the entire book had been like the last few chapters...

Interesting ultimately disappointing book.

In a nutshell this book is basically about a group of close knit police officers whose lives are disrupted by a mysterious car that every so often turns the air cold and spits out some strange dead creatures.Admitedly unique with likable characters but the problem is the thing is more odd than scary.Another problem is that most of the book is made up of the recollections of different characters so very little seems to happen.Fortunately King has decided to write again and hopefully in Cell he'll have a more compelling tale to tell.
