WTO

What is the WTO?

trade-------The World Trade Organization (WTO) is the only global international organization dealing with the rules of trade between nations. At its heart are the WTO agreements, negotiated and signed by the bulk of the world’s trading nations and ratified in their parliaments. The goal is to help producers of goods and services, exporters, and importers conduct their business.

Understanding the WTO

The first step is to talk. Essentially, the WTO is a place where member governments go, to try to sort out the trade problems they face with each other.

At its heart are the WTO agreements, negotiated and signed by the bulk of the world’s trading nations.

But the WTO is not just about liberalizing trade, and in some circumstances its rules support maintaining trade barriers — for example to protect consumers or prevent the spread of disease.

Why Do Trade Shows?

Exhibiting at a trade show offers you one of the best ways to get in front of a lot of customers and prospects in a relatively short amount of time. Trade shows give you the opportunity to not only show your product or describe your service, but also businesscreate that all important first impression. According to a Simmons Market Research Bureau study, 91% of respondents ranked trade shows as "extremely useful" as a source for product purchasing information. This was higher than any other source, including on-site visits from reps. Also, nearly half of the respondents had purchased products or services at the trade show.

At a typical national trade show, with 10,000 attendees and 1,000 exhibitors, you can realistically have 200 visitors per day. If you were making sales calls, you could not even approach that number. Granted, you don't always have the opportunity to go into as much detail in your presentation as you would like, but it opens the door for future communications -- a door that sometimes is very difficult to get your foot into....

Trade Policy and Programs

Thriving international commerce has long served U.S. interests by promoting U.S. prosperity and job-creation and promoting peaceful foreign relations. U.S. trade policy is based on two primary goals:

  • To expand access for American exporters to overseas markets
  • To ensure that commercial competitors and partners abroad observe fair trade practices.

To achieve these goals, the State Department and others in the U.S. helped establish the system of international trade rules administered by the World Trade Organization (WTO). The U.S. Government works to lower barriers to trade through negotiations both multilaterally in the WTO and bilaterally in negotiations with individual nations and regional groups. Currently a major round of negotiations is underway aimed at making trade more free and fair. We also work hard, including through U.S. Embassies and Consulates overseas, to ensure that foreign governments live up to their trade commitments.

Making Your Trade Show Display Stand Out

As small business owners, especially those in the start up phase, preparing for a trade show can be a very scary and frustrating time. What do we take for our trade show display and how do we present it?

tradeYou first need to find out the specifics of the trade show you are registered for or considering exhibiting in. If necessary, contact the organizers of the event and get details on the type of visitors that the show attracts and the layout of the area you will have to display your business.

Be sure to find out the size of the trade show display table you will have, whether there is wall space for your company sign, if there are electrical outlets available, and anything else that may or may not be included (i.e. a table cloth, etc.).

Once the show space specifics have been established, then you can move on to deciding what to take and how you can ‘show your stuff’

Employer Vs Employee

CV illo bcThere has always and will continue to be a certain push/pull between owners and workers. Each sees his position differently. The owner has considerations that the worker does not ever have to have as a concern. He is responsible for the whole business, not just the finishing department. He takes on all the risk of doing business. He must pay the taxes and insurance, and worry about the lawsuits and losing everything. He has much more at stake than just how good the finish is on the cabinet going out. If the finisher loses his job, he can go to another shop and if he is good, can pick up another job without much loss of income. If the business goes under, the owner loses much more than a job. Therefore, the business owner has the right to a larger share than those that work for him, otherwise they would assume the risk themselves and be in business for themselves instead of working for someone else. A good percentage of those I have seen go into business for themselves were back looking for a job as soon as they found out the hassles of owning a business (usually the first time they had to pay taxes and set up an accounting system).

The Business Company

The P&G community consists of nearly 98,000 people working in almost 80 countries worldwide. What began as a small, family-operated soap and candle company now provides products and services of superior quality and value to consumers in 140 countries.PG products

1837, Neither William Procter nor James Gamble ever intended to settle in Cincinnati. Although the city was a busy center of commerce and industry in the early nineteenth century, William, emigrating from England, and James, arriving from Ireland, were headed farther west.

Despite their intentions, however, both men ended their travels when they arrived at the Queen City of the West—William took care of his ailing wife, Martha, who soon died, and James sought medical attention for himself.

William Procter quickly established himself as a candlemaker. James Gamble apprenticed himself to a soapmaker. The two might never have met had they not married sisters, Olivia and Elizabeth Norris, whose father convinced his new sons-in-law to become business partners. In 1837, as a result of Alexander Norris' suggestion, a bold new enterprise was born: Procter & Gamble.

2002, P&G celebrates its 165th anniversary.A.G. Lafley is elected Chairman of the Board. Bruce Byrnes and R. Kerry Clark are elected Vice-Chairmen of the Board.P&G has 12 billion dollar brands in its portfolio. These brands represent more than half of the Company's sales and earnings and include Pampers, Tide, Ariel, Always, Pantene, Charmin, Bounty, Iams, Crest, Folgers, Pringles, and Downy. They also account for the majority of P&G's consumer interactions—the millions of "moments of truth" we face and win every day.

Business Plan

The Business Companybusiness plan precisely defines your business, identifies your goals, and serves as your firm's resume. The basic components include a current and pro forma balance sheet, an income statement, and a cash flow analysis. It helps you allocate resources properly, handle unforeseen complications, and make good business decisions. Because it provides specific and organized information about your company and how you will repay borrowed money, a good business plan is a crucial part of any loan application. Additionally, it informs sales personnel, suppliers, and others about your operations and goals.

The best way to show bankers, venture capitalists, and angel investors that you are worthy of financial support is to show them a great business plan. Make sure that your plan is clear, focused and realistic. Then show them that you have the tools, talent and team to make it happen. Your business plan is like your calling card, it will get you in the door where you'll have to convince investors and loan officers that you can put your plan into action.

An organization's business planners already know much of what will go into a business plan (this is true for strategic planning, too). However, development of the business plan greatly helps to clarify the organization's plans and ensure that key leaders are all "on the same script". Far more important than the plan document, is the planning process itself. Business plans can vary enormously. Libraries and bookstores have books devoted to business plan formats. This course is a starting point. You can then go on from here to design one that would be ideal for your particular enterprise.

World Information

Africa

Africa Regional Overview

The grand launch of the African Union (AU) in June 2002 was hailed as 'the greatest show on earth'. Yet, most of the world's eyes were focussed on the continent's starving millions. The food crisis of 2002 underlined the inequities of African development, in which the benefits of growth are not distributed to the poor. The growing divide within African society opened up ideological divisions between those competing for the AU's ideological heart.

Strong Growth

Africa experienced strong growth in 2002, despite the decline of the global economy. The level of growth was broadly determined by international commodity markets, agricultural output, domestic economic policy and internal conflict. GDP growth for sub-Saharan Africa was 3.7 per cent in 2002, a repeat performance of the previous year. For Africa as a whole, growth fell marginally from 3.0 per cent in 2001 to 2.9 per cent in 2002, due to North Africa's mediocre 1.9 per cent growth. The best performers included Angola, Chad, Equatorial Guinea and Mozambique, which all enjoyed growth rates of over 10 per cent. This was largely due to an influx of foreign investment in economies with a low level of economic development. Countries recording negative growth rates were Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria and Zimbabwe, which all experienced social unrest or internal conflict as well as drought.

Peace efforts in Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Sierra Leone and Sudan have all helped to lift the growth levels of these countries, particularly Angola which is the focus of a regional oil rush. This will have a positive impact on neighbouring countries, which have often bourne the brunt of political instability. However, West Africa is still plagued by a number of low-level conflicts and instability, particularly in Liberia where the government of President Charles Taylor has sought to undermine neighbouring states in its war against rebel armies.

Europe

Western Europe

The year 2001 and the beginning of 2002 has not been an easy period for Western Europe. The success of right-wing political parties in elections in the Netherlands and France during early 2002 sent shockwaves around Western Europe. The global slowdown has continued to depress GDP growth within the EU, with no expectation of a recovery until 2003. Despite EU member states suffering from lower GDP growth in 2001, the global slowdown has not had as bad an effect on the EU as in Japan or the US.

Eastern and Central Europe

The European Council confirmed at its Laeken summit in Belgium on 14--15 December 2001 that 8 Eastern European countries -- Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia -- were on course to join the EU in 2004, having nearly completed the 31 economic, political, legal and social criteria required for membership. The EU has made it clear that Bulgaria and Romania will have to wait for the second wave after 2007.

Outlook

Overall, there has been a marked improvement in the transitional Eastern and Central European economies, spurred on by the EU's growth, increased FDI and regional development programmes. In 2001, the global economic slowdown, falling oil prices and reduced external demand began to affect most of Europe, extending as far as Russia. The year will also leave its mark on Turkey, suffering from the worst economic crisis in its history and with little hope of recovery in the short-term. For Eastern and Central Europe, especially those preparing for EU membership, much will depend on how long the global slowdown continues to affect Western Europe.

Good Information Practices for Vaccine Safety Web Sites

The World Wide Web is undoubtedly a mine of useful information on various topics. Unfortunately, and partly as a result of the absence of regulation, some of the information provided can be of dubious credibility and at times misleading. This is particularly true in the area of vaccine safety, on which a flurry of websites providing unbalanced and misleading information (including the purporting of unfounded rumours), has appeared. This can lead to undue fears, particularly among the general public. In an effort to alleviate this problem, WHO has decided to assist readers of websites in identifying those sites providing information on vaccine safety that comply with good information practices. With this aim, GACVS has been asked to recommend a list of criteria that sites providing information on vaccine safety should adhere to.

The criteria in the list established following this request fall into four categories:

- Essential criteria i.e. with respect to credibility
- Important criteria i.e. with respect to content
- Practical criteria i.e. with respect to accessibility
- Desired criteria i.e. with respect to design

It is intended that the review by readers of the adherence of websites providing information on vaccine safety to the criteria in the list, particularly those relating to credibility and content, will help determine the trustworthiness of the site. In addition, organizations providing information on vaccine safety may wish to review to what extent their sites comply with such criteria and subsequently make enhancements where possible.
