stone age art
The Paleolithic period, or Old Stone Age, was the longest phase of human history.
Its most outstanding feature was the development of the human species-- Homo sapiens.
Paleolithic peoples were generally nomadic hunters and gatherers who sheltered
in caves, used fire, and fashioned stone tools. Their cultures are identified
by distinctive stone-tool industries. By the Upper Paleolithic there is evidence
of communal hunting, constructed shelters, and belief systems centering on magic
and the supernatural. Rock carving and paintings reached their peak in the Magdalenian culture of Cro-Magnon man.

Scientific Advancements and the Arts in Europe
In addition to the discovery and colonization of far off lands, these years
were filled with pronounced advancements in cartography and navigational instruments,
along with other advances in the study of anatomy and optics. The visual arts
responded to scientific and technological developments with new ideas about the
representation of man and his place in the world. For example, the formulation
of the laws governing linear perspective by Filippo Brunelleschi (1377–1446)
in the early fifteenth century, along with theories about idealized proportions
of the human form, influenced artists such as Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528)
and Leonardoda Vinci (1452–1519). Masters of illusionistic technique, Leonardo
and Dürer created powerfully realistic images of corporeal forms by delicately
rendering tendons, skin tissues, muscles, and bones, all of which demonstrate
expertly refined anatomical understanding. The Museum's unfinished Salvator Mundi
(32.100.64), begun in 1505 by Dürer, provides a unique opportunity to see
the artist's underdrawing and, in the beautifully rendered sphere of the earth
in Christ's left hand, metaphorically suggests the connection of sacred art and
the realms of science and geography.
Renoir Art
Renoir was born the son of a tailor on February 25, 1841 in Limoges, France.
Early in life he moved to Paris with his family. At age 14,
he became an apprentice as a porcelain painter. He became so adept at this he
might have spent the rest of days doing this type of work, but fortunately the firm went bankrupt in 1858.
Although he dabbled in several different jobs, but it seemed his earliest job
convinced him to attempt to become a full time painter. Renoir began copying famous
paintings in the Lourve. At this time he began attending the studio of Marc-Gabriel-Charles
Gleyer, a Swiss teacher who offered practical instruction to a number of artists.
Along with this he began attending the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. All of these events shaped his future.
Pinhole Photography
Pinhole photography is lensless photography. A tiny hole replaces the lens.
Light passes through the hole; an image is formed in the camera.
Pinhole cameras are small or large, improvised or designed with great care. Cameras
have been made of sea shells, many have been made of oatmeal boxes, coke cans
or cookie containers, at least one has been made of a discarded refrigerator.
Cameras have been cast in plaster like a face mask, constructed from beautiful
hardwoods, built of metal with bellows and a range of multiple pinholes. Station
wagons have been used as pinhole cameras – and rooms in large buildings.
Basically a pinhole camera is a box, with a tiny hole at one end and film or photographic paper at the other.
Pinhole cameras are used for fun, for art and for science.
Designing and building the cameras are great fun. Making images with cameras you
have made yourself is a great pleasure, too. But in serious photography the pinhole
camera is just an imaging device with its advantages and limitations, special
characteristics and potentials. By making the best of the camera's potential great
images can be produced. Some of the images could not have been produced with a lens.

The Pencil Portrait "Auge" (1946) is a very odd, but interesting
piece of work. It involved an eyeball with his head in the far away in the center
of the eyeball. I think that the drawing is pretty realistic. The color scheme
was black and white and I think it would have been cooler in color.

Dark
The Vanishing Face Short Story
by Stephen Collicoat
A young painter accepts a commission to paint the portrait of a society hostess.
He knows that if he succeeds in producing a pleasing portrait, her husband
- a brutal and successful businessman - has the contacts and wealth to secure
the painter's future career.
The painter commences, and after some hours of feverish work, pauses. He compares
his painting with the face of his sitter.
The painter shakes his head in frustration. This will never do. The portrait
depicts a hideous crone, while the woman patiently sitting
opposite is still in her thirties and is very beautiful.
Careful to hide his annoyance, the painter takes his pallet knife and begins
lifting away layers of paint, wiping the mess onto a rag and scrubbing the picture
back to bare canvas. Only the mouth, ears, nostrils and general shape of the head
seem right. He keeps these, while gouging out the eyes, removing the cheeks, and most of the nose and chin.
The Raven Poem
by Edgar Allan Poe
Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a
quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore -- While I nodded, nearly napping,
suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber
door. "'Tis some visiter," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door
-- Only this, and nothing more."
Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December, And each separate dying
ember wrought its ghost upon the floor. Eagerly I wished the morrow; -- vainly
I had sought to borrow From my books surcease of sorrow -- sorrow for the lost
Lenore -- For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore -- Nameless here for evermore.
And the silken sad uncertain rustling of each purple curtain Thrilled me --
filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before; So that now, to still the
beating of my heart, I stood repeating "'Tis some visiter entreating entrance at my chamber door
