Inshore Fly Fishing by Lou Tabory
(reviewed by TimS) Every striped bass surf fisherman whether you fly fish for striped bass or surf fish with a spinning rod and plugs should be required to read this book! It will simply make you a better fisherman.

Lou Tabory spells out every step and stage of how to fly fish in the salt for striped bass in this book! His writing is easily understandable and intelligent. He explains how to use the water to bring your flies to the fish, how to determine where the fish should be in many different types of water, which flies to choose in certain conditions and why, and he does all this is a manner that even a non-fly fisherman can understand! He also introduces you to his flies, all are simple, all are well thought out and very effective! I've been fly fishing the suds for about a dozen years now and have come to rely on more than a few of Mr. Tabory's patterns, they are simply ingenious! Like I said, should be required reading!

Shipwrecks of the Atlantic by Bill Davis
This is a book I'm very interested in reading. Not only is it supposed to list all the major ship wrecks from Montauk, NY to Cape May, NJ, it is supposed to offer a lot of details. History of the ship, how and exactly where it was sunk, etc, etc. I think it will be an important read and will certainly come in handy for future bottom fishing trips ;-) I'll put up a personal review after I get through the book.

Wreck Valley by Daniel Berg

Wreck Valley vol II by Daniel Berg (review below by book editor)
Wreck Valley Vol II is the most comprehensive, accurate, illustrated collection of information, photographs, sketches and stories ever written about the wrecks that lie off the Long Island, New York, and New Jersey shores. This book is a completely new updated, expanded and enhanced edition of Daniel Berg's original Wreck Valley book. Wreck Valley Vol II covers the history, legend, present condition, aquatic life and pertinent dive information on over 90 shipwrecks. This text includes over 265 illustrations comprised of 137 color photographs, 97 black and white historical images, 32 sketches, plus one map. The collection of historical photographs alone would take years of archive research to locate and would cost a small fortune if purchased separately. Many of these rare photographs have never before been published. Vol II also includes a Loran "C" List of accurate shipwrecks locations.

Men's Lives by Peter Matthiessen
This is, from what I'm told, a most interesting read. It was written by a long time surfcaster who, ironically, has always been a very big supporter of commercial fishing. I just ordered it recently after reading a few thread on SurfTalk which contained quotes from this book. There are numerous quotes from commercial fishermen in this book, many of which confirm some of our suspicions about the way they think, the way they view recreational fishermen and their disdain for the regulations put in place to maintain healthy fish populations. I'm anxious to read it and will try to put up a better review once I get a chance to read this book in it's entirety.

Stripers and Streamers - Ray Bondorew
List Price: $19.95

Stripers and Streamers by Ray Bondorew. An excellent book, Ray goes deeply into fly design with the how's and why's of using these flies to successfully catch stripers on the long rod. His fly designs differ sharply with Lou Tabory's in that Mr. Bondorew uses flies that give the hint or suggestion of a live bait that many folks swear by. I use both types of flies, a blend of these two fine fishermen...some are suggestive and some are forceful imitations. Both work and I wouldn't want to have to fish without either type of fly! He also goes into technique, equipment, safety, and almost everything else you could imagine in this fine book.
Production Fly Tying - A.K. Best

Production Fly Tying by A.K. Best. I was thoroughly impressed by this book. First off, I'd like to note what wonderfully clean fingernails this guy shows in all his photos! ;^) Odd for a fisherman/fly tier to display such a fine manicure! Anyway, I found this book to "unteach" bad habits as well as to teach good habits. It's the first book I recommend to folks who are either first starting out tying flies or who just want to get better. It's thorough, it's concise, right down to how to find the best chair/desk height to be comfortable when tying. A must read if you ever do/intend to sit at a vice for any reason!
Blues by John Hersey

Blues by John Hersey. (Reviewed by Doug Phillips):  This book is a combination non-fiction, fiction, cookbook, and poetry, prose work that is well written, easily understood, and well worth the reading time. Each chapter follows the progression of a relationship between the author (written in the first person) and a stranger who befriends him.  Also, each chapter has an interesting poem or short story preceding it and at the end, a recipe for cooking fish (bluefish in this books instance). I found it to be educational, comical, and serious too.  Mr. Hersey tells a great story in a way that makes you feel like you are right there with them.  I re-read this book at least once every year.

Power Surfcasting by Ron Arra. Whilst I personally, have not read this book, many of the fine folks who's opinion I value more than my own have told me that it is the solution to getting more distance from your casts! Ron has personally contacted me and we will be carrying his video that shows you how to get more "reach" with your tackle!
Fly Rodding the Coast by Ed Mitchell
List Price: $29.95

Fly Rodding the Coast by Ed Mitchell. A fine, fat, hard covered book full of an extreme amount of how-to, why-to, and when-to, fly fishing information! A great book for those making or planning to make the transition from fresh water fly fishing to fly fishing in the salt. Great illustrations, excellent photos, and a very well written book, clear and concise! Coupled with Lou Tabory's Inshore Fly Fishing (see above), these two books will get anyone interested well into the learning curve.
Innovative Saltwater Flies by Bob Vererka

Innovative Saltwater Flies by Bob Vererka. (Review by Jim-DE)
This book is interesting reading for those interested in both the history and development of saltwater flies and tying techniques. The book features 36 tiers with over 250 patterns. The tiers give a brief history on themselves and their most influential patterns. How to tie and fish these patterns in many cases are taken to a step by step detailed instructional format.
Unfortunately, several very well known and highly respected tiers are not on this list of 36 featured tiers. But, I guess it would be impossible to include everyone.
Those of you interested in books such as this will enjoy its content and the quality of its pictures. This is definitely coffee table material!
Striper Moon by J. Kenney Abrames

Striper Moon by J. Kenney Abrames.
One of the first few striper fishing books that I ever read, it was also one of the most memorable. The author gives a very fresh, very informative look at the ways of the striped bass, including it's haunts and it's forage, and how it all relates to the moon. But that's not the whole thing, it's filled with stories and excellent speculation, with just the right amount of how-to and why. It's not a book based on other books, it's from the heart and the experience of Mr. Abrames himself. I found it profound and moving as the author's love and awe of the surf and the striped bass are contagious.
