Donald, Mayfair share Honda lead
Sat Mar 11, 2006 09:16 PM ET
The 28-year-old Englishman mixed five birdies with a solitary bogey to finish on nine-under 207 after a challenging day of blustery winds and fast-running greens at the Country Club at Mirasol. That put him level with American Billy Mayfair, who eagled the par-five 17th on the way to an even 72. Donald and Mayfair took advantage of a stumbling finish by overnight leader David Toms, who bogeyed four of the last six holes for a 76. World number eight Toms, one ahead of the chasing pack at the start of the day, had to settle for a share of sixth place with Sweden's Mathias Gronberg (72) at six under. American Jeff Gove, back on the PGA Tour this season after a three-year absence, returned a 69 to lie third at eight under. Australia's Geoff Ogilvy and Swede Daniel Chopra were a further a shot back in a tie for fourth, after matching 71s. "The greens are very severe out here, and that's what makes the course very difficult," Donald told reporters. "That, coupled with a bit of wind, makes it tough and that's why the scores are pretty down right now. 'BEST DAY' "I felt like today was my best day out of the three, so I'm encouraged about that," added the 28-year-old, who has finished no worse than tied for 24th in his first four PGA Tour starts of the year. "I've got off to a steady start this year but now I've got to finish the job off."
Mayfair, best known for being the last person to beat Tiger Woods in a playoff, was elated after putting himself in line for his first title since the 1998 Buick Open.
