Browns snap up Jurevicius, Bentley
Sat Mar 11, 2006 11:55 PM ET
Bentley, a much sought after center, received a six-year deal worth a reported $36 million, while 31-year-old receiver Jurevicius signed a four-year deal. "We definitely wanted to make this happen today," Browns general manager Phil Savage said at a news conference. "We feel like we've made a real nice statement to the rest of the league and to our fans that 'Hey, we're serious about wanting to win."' Bentley, 26, is a two-time Pro Bowl selection and last year's NFC starting center. He played the past four seasons with the New Orleans Saints. "I'm getting better," Bentley said. "As an offensive lineman you can play almost forever. I don't believe that I've even begun to peak as a player." Bentley played high school and college football in Ohio and said returning to the area was "a dream come true." Jurevicius, who also played high school football in the area, has been to three Super Bowls in the past eight years. He has 233 career catches with the New York Giants, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks. The Browns also came to terms with free agent tackle Kevin Shaffrer. Shaffrer, 26, started all 16 games of last season at left tackle for Atlanta. He played 53 career games since being drafted out of Tulsa in 2002.
