Mets infielder Boone calls end to career
Wed Mar 1, 2006 07:17 PM ET
Boone, a three-time all-star, made the announcement during the New York Mets' spring training workouts in Port St. Lucie, Florida. The 36-year-old infielder was trying to beat out Japan's Kaz Matsui for the starting job at second but felt he had lost his edge and wanted to leave the game on his own terms. "Something I've loved my whole life has become a major, major job for me," Boone told MLB.com. "I don't think it would be fair for me - or fair to the Mets - to continue something I've loved my whole life and had so much passion for, and all of a sudden that passion isn't there anymore. "At the end of the day, physically I think I could still do it. "It wasn't as easy as three or four years ago to get out there every day, but to me, I just lost it. "I lost the edge." In 14 major league seasons with the Seattle Mariners, Cincinnati Reds, Atlanta Braves, San Diego Padres and Minnesota Twins, Boone had a career batting average of .266 with 1,775 hits, 252 home runs and 1,021 RBI in 1,780 career games.
He was also a four-time Gold Glove award winner and a two-time Silver Slugger recipient.
