Basic information

Why do I need to enter this basic information?

Back to the tophis information will be dynamically added to your site. It may be embedded into your header (on every page) and can be used to generate a location map so that your clients can find you.

What information will be shown to my visitors?

What if I do not want my visitors to see some of the information I enter?

YoBack to the topu can choose what to show your visitors. For example you can choose not to show your address and choose to suppress the creation of an automatic map. You can add as much or as little information as you like. If, for example you choose not to enter a fax number the system will suppress the fax icon and build the contact page without the fax number.

How does the map system work?

Back to the topThe map system builds a location map based on the postcode that you enter.

Can I choose not to show the map?

Back to the topYes, if you click 'hide map' this will prevent the map from being displayed and the contact page will be constructed without the map displayed.

What if I want to put in a longer slogan or company name?

Back to the topThere are practical limitations in any system and we have to limit the size of the company name and the slogan. The system will limit the length of your name and you slogan appropriately.

What is the security password for?

Back to the topYou have the ability to lock the WebPages on your website. If you enter a password here and then choose to lock the WebPages in step3 then the visitors will only be able to view you're the pages you have locked if they enter this password.

I have uploaded a logo but it has not appeared in my website.

Back to the topOnly some of the template designs incorporate a login into their design. Where this is the case the logo will be added in an appropriate place and sized accordingly. This sizing may well render any text in the image unreadable. You have three choices. 1) Contact us and discuss the modification of the template you like to incorporate your logo. 2) Ask us to create a logo customized for you that uses your logo. 3) Choose a template design that does not use a logo in its structure.

What is the [remove logo] button for at the bottom of the step1 page?

Back to the topThis is a 'clean' way to remove the logo from the page. It totally removes the logo from our system allowing you to replace it with whatever image you choose.

When I log in and go into step1 I see a gray Apple button on the left. What is this for?

Back to the topWe have engineered our system to be able to be used by users with PCs and Apple Macs. If you are a user with an Apple Mac then you must use a Netscape browser and then click this Apple Button to use our webpage editor.

After I select a logo image and click submit, nothing happens for a while and then I get a browser error.

Back to the topIf the logo image you have chosen is very large and if you re on dial-up then your browser may well sit waiting for the image to upload. Some browsers will only wait 'just-so-long' before issuing a time out error. If this happens we recommend uploading a logo less than 250K

I see my name on the left of the page and when I click it I see more information stored about me. What is the information for and why is it different from the basic info I am entering in step 1?

Back to the topWe hold your personal contact information separately from the website information you enter in step1. This is to allow us to contact you in the most appropriate manner and to allow you to have more than one website. None of the information you see on this page will be visible to a website user.

Do I need to download the file linked to the 'Windows 2000 fix' link on the left of the window?

Back to the topOnly download this file if you get a Microsoft Office 2000 warning asking you to insert your setup CD.

What are the two numbers on the bottom left of the screen for?

Back to the topThese are you unique ID numbers used by reason8. The first is your Website I.D the second is your Client I.D.

Back to the topYes, because we maintain your design separately from your content you can change either without affecting the other.

What are the 'text only' buttons that I can choose from?

Back to the topWhen you change your navigation buttons, one of the options you can choose is to select a 'text only' button. This removes any colour from the button and just places a word that is click-able. However, use with care, if you choose a colour for the text that is the same colour as the background then your visitors will not be able to see the text.

Can I adjust the format of the design (such as changing the font used in the header or perhaps the way that the logo is positioned in the header)?

Back to the topUnfortunately you do not have the ability to graphically alter the header or the design in any way. However, we can do this for you for a small fee.

I like the template but would prefer different colours

Back to the topWe can alter the template with your personal colours for a small fee.

Can I change the text in the footer?

Back to the topUnfortunately the footer along with the rest of the template is fixed. If you would like us to make some modifications to the footer or the rest of the template we can do this for you for a small fee.

When I click 'test your website' after I have logged in, I can see a Reason 8 logo below the footer. Will my visitors be able to see this logo too?

Back to the topNo this is only visible when you are logged in and in editing mode. When you logout it will disappear.

Can I change the background from neutral gray to another colour?

Back to the topUnfortunately not yet, although this is a feature that will be introduced shortly.

WebPages

How do I create a new webpage?

Back to the topJust go to step 3, then type in the name of your new webpage (next to the New Webpage button) then click the [New Webpage] button. Confirm that you wish to create a new page in the next screen.
You will then see that a new webpage appears in the table when you click the [Step3] button at the top of the page.

Back to the topWhen you create a new webpage, it is empty. Our system detects an empty page and places a small image and the words 'under construction' so that you visitors know to click back at a later date.

How do I delete a webpage that I have created?

Back to the topIt is easy you delete a webpage. Click the [Step3] button at the top of the page, and then click the [delete] icon on the row of the table that holds the webpage you wish to delete. In the screen that follows confirm that you do indeed wish to delete the page.

How do I delete my home page?

Back to the topYour website needs a home page to function. It is the first page that your guests see when they visit your site. Because of this the system will not let you delete your home page. You can however delete the content of your page by clicking [Step3] and then the name of your page and deleting all the text from the editor window.

How do I rename a webpage?

Back to the topIt's simple just click [step3] and then click the small blue icon under the 'Settings' column and on the row next to the name of the page you wish to change. You will see that you are now able to change the name of the page to whatever you wish. Take care to try and keep the name to less than 16 letters, as this is the width of the button.

How do I change the order of the webpage buttons that appear on the left of my website?

Back to the topIt's simple just click [step3] and then click the small blue icon under the 'Settings' column and on the row next to the name of the page you wish to change. You will then see a box with a number in next to 'Position in List'. This number dictates the display order of the buttons. The higher the number the further down the list the button will appear.

Can I add password protection to one of my WebPages?

Back to the topYes its simple, just click [step3] and then click the small blue icon under the 'Settings' column and on the row next to the name of the page you wish to change. Just click the box next to Password Protect. Note you must enter a password in step1 for the password protection to activate. You can only password protect a page that appears in the list when you click [Step3]

I want to have more letters in my page name is there anything that I can do?

Back to the topThere have to be some practical limitations imposed on a your website and for now we have had to limit the number of letters in your webpage name to 16. In future releases this will be increased.

How does the editor work?

Back to the topOur Web-Word editor lies at the heart of our system and enables you to create fantastic WebPages as easily as you create a letter using Microsoft Word. We recommend that you view our visual and spoken tutorials to learn how to use the editor.

I cannot seem to get the editor to work?

Back to the topOur editor will only work with the last 2 generations of web browser. Which means that if you are a PC user you must be using Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or later. (As a rough rule of thumb if you have Windows 2000 or Widows XP operating systems)you should have a browser capable of running our editor. If you are an Apple Mac user you must run a Netscape browser and make sure you click the apple button on the lest of your screen.

When I open the page with the webpage editor my desktop asks me to insert my MS Office setup disks. What can I do?

Back to the topThis is bug in the Microsoft office suite. We have created a little fix that will stop this from happening. Just click here to down load the file. When you have downloaded this onto your PC double click the win200fix.bat file and you will never see the error again.

I changed content with the editor but it didn't change on my webpage.

Back to the topAfter you make changes with the editor you must always remember to click the [save page] button. If the content still does not change click the 'Refresh' button on your web browser.

How do I watch the speaking tutorials?

Back to the topYou can watch the speaking tutorials that guide you through all the aspects of the functions of the editor. Click the [Step3] button at the top of the screen. Click on the name of a page that you want to edit. Above the editor you will see a movie camera and text: 'watch help videos'. Click to watch the help video tutorials.

Do I have to do each of the steps 1 to 4 in order?

Back to the topNo not at all. The sequence we laid out is only a suggestion, but it will make things easier for you and for you to see how your site will look if you do things in this order.

What happens if I do not logout?

Back to the topYour system will remain live for 20 mins during a period of inactivity. After this time the system will automatically log you out. If you do not logout and someone else returns to an editing page you were viewing within 20 minutes, they will be able to change your entire site. You must therefore always logout and keep your username and password safe.
