Newspapers - Research Basics

Learn how to find and get newspaper titles held by the Library in hardcopy, microfilm or online. Find out how to locate specific articles by using indexes (hardcopy and electronic) and online full-text newspaper databases. The session will also cover other material accessed in the Newspaper/Microform Reading Room including research collections and family history resources.

Successful Searching 2 - Advanced Search Techniques

Learn advanced search techniques and discover the tools to find “hidden treasures” in the National Library’s collections. This session will cover advanced searching of the Library catalogue and LibrariesAustralia, and demonstrate finding journal articles using the online resources available in the Library’s E-Resources service. Successful Searching 2 is intended for people who have completed the Successful Searching – Research Basics Session, or are familiar with basic research techniques.

Learn basic search techniques to enable you to find books, journals and other sources of information held in the collections of the National Library and in other libraries in Australia. This session will cover general research techniques as well as basic searching of the Library catalogue and LibrariesAustralia.  Successful Searching 1 is intended for people who have completed the New User Session, or have some experience using the National Library's website and collections.

Learn advanced search techniques and discover the tools to find “hidden treasure” in the National Library’s newspaper collections.  This session will cover advanced searching of newspaper indexes, the catalogue and Libraries Australia and demonstrate finding articles using the online resources in Factiva and The Times Digital Archive.  Advanced Search Techniques is intended for people who are familiar with basic research techniques.

Behind the scenes tour

Take a behind-the scenes tour where you might meet Charlie the robotic book trolley, visit the enormous Stacks where the books are stored, see a bushranger's gun, or the false teeth of former Prime Minister. This tour is great for school-aged children. It explores the non-public access areas of the Library and shows the inner workings of the largest library in the Southern Hemisphere.

Every Thursday at 12:30 pm.

Previous e-Resource exercises

 

The training exercises used for previous tutorials are available online. You can work through them at your own pace, either within the National Library or in another institution such as a University or State Library that may also provide access to some of these resources.


Teach Yourself Online

Teach Yourself Online is a self-paced tutorial designed to assist Library users, both on-site and within the library, with their study and research skills. The online tutorial provides an interactive environment that enables users to work through various activities and exercises within a series of six modules. The modules are Using Teach Yourself Online, Navigating the Library's Web Site, Understanding Your Topic, Search the Library's Catalogue, Using Databases for Research, and Searching the Internet.


How to find journal articles

The National Library has developed a guide which explains how to use journal indexes to locate journal articles in the library's collection.
