Volunteers

Volunteer Program

The National Library of Australia welcomes and values its volunteers, recognising the wide variety of skills and knowledge they contribute. They undertake a range of roles that extend accessibility to our collections and enable us to expand our services.

Tasks

Volunteers perform a variety of tasks in many areas of the Library including Pictures, Manuscripts, Imaging Services and Friends and have the satisfaction of helping to complete projects that would not be done without them. Volunteer opportunities are organised on the basis that they enhance but do not replace the work of paid staff. Many of the projects include working with unique and fascinating materials held in the Library. Volunteers have found the experience and training gained through their volunteer work at the Library to be beneficial when seeking paid employment in the community.

Hours of Duty

Volunteers work within the standard day or as required. The internationally recognised average for volunteer work is 15 hours per week. However in some cases a volunteer may contribute more than the 15 hours on a special project for a short period of time.

Compensation

National Library volunteers are fully covered under the provisions of the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988 (SRC Act) administered by Comcare.

Security

The National Library of Australia reserves the right to perform a security assessment as required.

Termination of Volunteer Agreement

Volunteers may terminate their Volunteer Agreement at any time. The Volunteers Coordinator may also terminate the Volunteer Agreement at any time on advice from the relevant Program Manager.
