Other Services

If you have a citation that is unclear, or hard to identify, DocSS can provide assistance where possible.

DocSS will also provide details of holdings to libraries who do not have access to holdings information about Australian libraries.

Copyright

The following deals with the most common type of requests made by libraries outside Australia. Please contact us if you require more details about copyright or our copyright fee based service.

Requests from overseas libraries should comply with Australian copyright law and include the appropriate declarations. Under Section 50 of the Australian Copyright Act a not-for-profit library may request another not-for-profit library to copy a 'reasonable portion' of a work to supply to a library user for the purposes of research or study or for inclusion in their collection. A library will probably be not-for-profit if the library itself is not established or operated to make a profit on its overall activities. If a library is part of a profit making organisation it does not necessarily mean that the library is a for-profit library.

Reasonable portion

A 'reasonable portion' could be described as:

  • Journals - 1 article per issue, or 2 or more articles per issue if those articles relate to the same subject matter.
  • Other published works - a reasonable portion (defined as the greater of 10% or 1 chapter from a book of 10 or more pages)

The following declaration must be included on the request:

Request complies with section 50 of the Copyright Act.

Borrowing conditions

You may borrow monograph material held at the National Library of Australia. Serials and some of the special collections may not be available for loan, however we will respond quickly if the item is not available.

The loan period for material borrowed from the National Library is 10 weeks with no extentions. For some special materials the loan period is 4 weeks with no extentions.

Overdue notices are sent at the end of the loan period. If no response is received the material is assumed lost and an invoice generated.

The charge for one lost item is $300 (GST inclusive), and includes a $150 non-refundable administrative fee on issue of the invoice. A first and a final reminder are sent out before issuing the invoice, allowing you enough time to either contact us or return the item.

Turn-around Time

Turn-around time is measured from the time of receipt of request to time of despatch and may depend on how much verification is required.
