Northwest Is Top 100 Worldwide Training Organization Again
Northwest again was named one of the world's top 100 training organizations by "Training Magazine." Northwest was awarded the No. 1 airline designation, named Best in Class in the transportation category and ranked No. 19 overall. Last year, Northwest also ranked 19 overall and as tops in the airline and transportation categories.

"Training Magazine's" editorial staff selected the winners through a multi-tiered nomination, application and interview process. Among the factors considered were the training program's operational impact, its quantity and quality, goals, evaluations and the variety of training methods offered.

Northwest's nomination featured the training support of the A330 aircraft introduction to service as an Outstanding Initiative. In addition, training efforts and results in reservations, flight operations, inflight, IS, ground operations, technical operations, cargo and human resources were recognized.

Other airlines included in the Top 100 were United at No. 92 and Continental at No. 96. The March issue of "Training Magazine" features the list of winners.

Northwest named as Honoree in 13th annual CIO 100 by CIO magazine
Northwest Airlines was named as one of 100 honorees in the 13th annual CIO-100. Companies were nominated for the honor based on their customer service excellence and customer relationship management.

Northwest ranks #2 in top airline web sites based on Forrester Research results, according to Digitrends Online-December 1999
Northwest Airlines was ranked number 2 overall in a survey done by Forrester Research. The Net research company graded the airline sites for customer service, booking features, fare finders and a host of other features. Northwest was cited for superior customer service and flight status checking online.

In a recent review of frequent flyer program websites by webflyer.com, Northwest Airlines received a rating of 4 1/2 out of a possible 5 stars for the Frequent Flyer Center on nwa.com. "Simplicity works, and the clear markings on the site make navigation easy and quick. In addition, the right-hand side of the page is taken up by a program guide including info on earning, burning, elite-level benefits and qualifications and a newsletter...This site remains world-class. "

Northwest Receives Friends of Thailand Award
Northwest Airlines was recently presented a Friends of Thailand 2000 Award from the Tourism Authority of Thailand in recognition of its contributions to Thai society and the development of Thailand tourism. The award reflects the large number of passengers traveling on Northwest to Thailand, the benefit Northwest brings to Thai society in preserving the environment and culture, and Northwest's promotion of tourism to Thailand. David Wookey, Northwest Vice President-Asia, accepted the award and said, "The award reflects Northwest's commitment and policy of supporting the local tourism industry and communities we serve. Congratulations and thank you to all Northwest staff in Thailand for your great performance."

Northwest Airlines Ranked #1 Airline on the Internet by Business 2.0 Magazine -- May 1999
Northwest Airlines is the leader among U.S. airlines and one of the country's top e-commerce performers, according to a survey done by Business 2.0 Magazine.

Northwest ranked 63rd overall, joining a list that included such Internet heavyweights as Cisco Systems (1), America Online (5), Amazon.com (6) and Yahoo (11), Netscape (40), Mindspring (54), Microsoft (61), Gateway (66) and Apple (94).

Business 2.0 set out to determine "what are the leading companies of the Net Economy." After reviewing more than 600 candidate companies, the magazine settled on a list of "the 100 companies that are taking the best advantage of the opportunities promised by the Net Economy." Northwest Airlines AirCares Recognized at United Nations -- April 29, 1999
Northwest Airlines AirCares, the airline's community support program, was recognized at the United Nations on Thursday, April 29, as the most innovative and pioneering best practice initiative in the airline industry. Chris Clouser, Northwest senior vice president-Human Resources, Communications and Administration presented AirCares program elements in an address to more than 200 UN delegates during a Sustainable Tourism Panel sponsored by Airline Ambassadors International at the seventh session of the Commission on Sustainable Development.

Northwest Airlines AirCares program was established in 1992 to support the airline's efforts to work in partnership with national and international non-profit organizations that reflect it's corporate values and community concerns.

Northwest AirCares Receives Corporate Award -- September 19, 1998
Northwest Airlines received the Corporate Award from the National Marrow Donor Program for its efforts to promote the non-profit organization through the Northwest AirCares charitable support program. The award was presented Sept. 19 in Minneapolis at the organization's annual conference. Northwest featured the Minneapolis-based National Marrow Donor Program onboard the aircraft before millions of passengers during the fourth quarter last year and generated cash and travel contributions for the organization. Northwest employees also hosted marrow drives in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Detroit and Memphis, adding potential donors to their international Registry.

The National Marrow Donor Program was established 11 years ago to coordinate marrow transplants from unrelated donors with life-threatening blood diseases such as leukemia and lymphoma. They maintain a worldwide Registry of almost 3 million volunteers willing to donate their marrow to an unrelated recipient.

Northwest Airlines Honored for Disability Accommodation Program -- September 14, 1998
Northwest Airlines has been recognized by Courage Center and the Minnesota Business Partnership for its efforts in the employment of people with disabilities. The organizations presented Northwest Airlines with the Third Annual Partners Award.

The award honors a corporation that fosters an environment that is inclusive, creates opportunities for all people, and exemplifies a positive workplace for people with disabilities.

"The Partners Award was created to recognize the achievements of large corporations in employment practices for people with disabilities," said David Phillips, executive director of Courage Center. "Northwest Airlines has a distinguished record in this regard and provides a good model for other corporations to follow."

Northwest developed its Accommodation Policy with the help of an employee advisory group that includes many employees with disabilities. The policy is designed to ensure equal access to the work place for people with disabilities. It is based on an interactive process used to explore and evaluate accommodation ideas and provide applicants and employees the tools and materials, flexibility and adaptability that will be of mutual benefit to the individual, to Northwest, and to the customers it serves.

Northwest Airlines receives best sparkling wine award -- July 22, 1998
Northwest Airlines has been awarded first place in the Best Sparkling Wine category for its 1990 Laurent-Perrier Brut Grand Siecle, and tied for fifth place in the Best Red Wine category for its 1991 Nelson Estate Cabernet Franc. The awards are part of Business Traveler International's 10th Annual Cellars in the Sky competition.

The results were published in the July/August issue of Business Traveler International (BTI). The tasting, which was held on May 8, at New York's Palace Hotel, included wines from 34 domestic and international airlines. Each airline was asked to submit two red wines, two white wines, and a sparkling wine from their onboard business class wine menu. Winners were announced for the Best Cellar in the Sky, and in each of the category types. Northwest is the only U.S. carrier to take a first place award in any of the categories.

"We are very honored to receive this prestigious award," said Michael E. Levine, Northwest executive vice president marketing and international. "Since introducing our World Business Class service in 1994, we have continued to offer a selection of interesting wines to meet the discriminating tastes of our business travelers, and this award affirms our efforts."

Northwest wins award for 50th anniversary campaign -- June 11, 1998
Northwest won a Silver Anvil Award at the Public Relations Society of America's (PRSA) Annual Awards presentation in New York June 11.

Regarded as the "Oscar" of the public relations world, the award was given for Northwest Airlines' Bridging the Pacific integrated communications campaign celebrating the airline's 50th anniversary of service to Asia.

Northwest has served Asia longer than any other U.S. airline and to commemorate its golden anniversary, the airline launched a worldwide communications and advertising campaign. The most visible component was WorldPlane, a Boeing 747-400 decorated with artwork supplied by 19 children from the United States and Asia.

Northwest wins PATA Gold Award -- March 30, 1998
Northwest Airlines was honored March 30 with a Gold Award at the 47th Annual Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Conference in Manila. The award recognizes the airline for its "Bridging the Pacific" marketing program marking 50 years of service to Asia, and featuring WorldPlane, a Northwest 747-400 aircraft with an exterior decorated with colorful children's artwork.

"PATA's Gold Awards recognize the very best the region's travel industry has to offer. The winning projects set new standards for excellence and innovation," said PATA Chief Executive Officer Joseph A. McInerney.

Northwest Airlines became the first commercial airline to fly the "Great Circle Route" to Asia in 1947. To mark fifty years of its service to this market and to visually demonstrate the "Bridging the Pacific" anniversary theme, Northwest developed WorldPlane as the centerpiece of its year-long celebration. The 747-400 served as a dramatic mobile canvas for colorful artwork supplied by Asian and American children as it circled the globe in regularly scheduled Northwest service.

WorldWeb recognized by Dow Jones -- March 1998
The Dow Jones Business Directory recently chose Northwest's WorldWeb as the top airline site after its staff studied nearly 10,000 business web sites in the past year.

"Northwest Airlines offers an easy-to-navigate site with the usual airline fare -- and then some," the critique states. "You will find flight information, online booking, corporate information, press releases, job opportunities and specials. It even has seat and airline maps."

Four other airlines made the select list in the following order. Northwest No. 1 with 31 points, American No. 2 with 30 points, Alaska No. 3 with 28 points, United No. 4 with 27 points and Southwest No. 5 with 25 points. No other airlines made the list.

This is the seventh recognition for Northwest's WorldWeb in the last 15 months.

Quality of Life Award given to Northwest Airlines -- March 5, 1998
The Greater Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce (GMCC) presented Northwest Airlines with a Quality of Life Award at a ceremony held March 5. Northwest was one of six companies that was recognized.

The Greater Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce initiated its annual awards program seven years ago in an effort to publicly showcase GMCC members for the innovative things they do everyday to improve the quality of life for their customers, neighbors and employees.

Northwest was selected in the category of community involvement for the Northwest AirCares efforts to provide assistance to flood victims in the Red River Valley. Over consecutive weekends, Northwest airlifted 220,000 pounds of relief supplies and more than 1,000 volunteers to Grand Forks to assist the Salvation Army and the United Way.

Retired Northwest Airlines officer receives NAACP Award -- Feb. 14, 1998
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) honored retired Northwest executive John E. Williams with a special image award at the 29th Annual NAACP Image Awards ceremony Feb. 14 in Pasadena, Calif. Williams was vice president of corporate relations at Northwest Airlines; he retired in November 1997.

"John E. Williams spent 32 years helping Northwest Airlines enhance its economic, social and community objectives until he retired this past November, and he leaves a legacy there that will not be easy to duplicate," said Myrlie Evers-Williams, chair of the NAACP board of directors.  

The NAACP image awards began as a way to honor African American entertainers. It has since grown into an event to honor those who exemplify positive images of African Americans in several different fields.

Air Transport World awards Northwest, KLM top honors -- February 1998
Air Transport World selected the Northwest-KLM alliance as Airline of the Year. The magazine of world airline management announced its selection in its February 1998 edition.

On announcing the award, Air Transport World said, "This alliance, which has spawned a host of imitators, allows travelers to make 'seamless connections' across a route network that encompasses more than 400 destinations in 80 countries. ... Simply stated, Northwest and KLM have transformed the very structure of the airline industry through their successful alliance."

In addition, the magazine named Northwest's Airlink partner Mesaba as Regional Airline of the Year. Northwest, KLM and Mesaba were presented their top honors Feb. 23 at an awards ceremony held in Singapore in conjunction with Asian Aerospace '98.

Careers and the Disabled magazine ranks Northwest Airlines 11th -- January 1998
In a survey by Careers and the Disabled magazine, Northwest Airlines ranked 11th in the category of top 50 companies for whom respondents would most like to work or whom they believe would provide a positive working environment for people with disabilities.

The survey was published in the winter 1997 edition of the magazine.  Survey respondents were comprised of university students, active job seekers and working professionals at all levels from all parts of the United States.

WorldWeb on a victory roll -- Jan. 24, 1998
The Web Marketing Association announced that Northwest's WorldWeb has been selected as the Best Airline Site in the association's 1997 Web Awards competition. The site received a score of 64 out of a possible 70 points.

The Web Marketing Association posted a list of winners on its web site at www.webaward.org, sent an email message to its mailing list and issued a news release to the media to promote the winning firms and their sites.

British travelers name Northwest Airlines top U.S. domestic carrier -- Jan. 20, 1998
Britain's most frequent travelers named Northwest Airlines the top U.S. domestic carrier at a ceremony in London Jan. 20, 1998. Northwest captured the gold in the Best U.S. Domestic Airline category of the 1998 Executive Travel Airline of the Year Awards.

"Northwest's steadily improving service, both at home and on international routes, has been recognized by its most critical and demanding customer base," said Mike Toynbee, editor of Executive Travel.

Northwest was selected based on nominations received by Executive Travel's 43,000 frequent traveler readers and a 2,500 travel check team that monitors more than 30 aspects of airline service.

Fortune ranks Northwest Airlines among World's Most Admired  -- Oct. 27, 1997
Fortune magazine in its Oct. 27 issue ranked Northwest Airlines among the World's Most Admired companies. Northwest ranked second in the airline industry category with an overall score of 6.72. British Airways ranked No. 1 with a score of 6.90.  

Fortune magazine and the worldwide consulting firm the Hay Group asked senior executives and outside directors in each industry and financial analysts to study and compare the competitors in each field.

The magazine judged each company on the following nine criteria -- innovativeness, overall quality of management, value as a long-term investment, responsibility to the community and the environment, ability to attract and keep talented people, quality of products or services, financial soundness, wise use of corporate assets and the company's effectiveness in doing business globally.

Money magazine ranks top 10 U.S. airlines -- November 1997
Money magazine in its November issue ranked the performance of the top 10 U.S. airlines and found Northwest Airlines ranked fourth. Southwest, Alaska and US Airways ranked above Northwest while United, American, America West, Delta, Continental and TWA ranked below. US Airways beat Northwest in its overall score by a fraction of a point.

The magazine evaluated each airline based on the following nine key factors -- safety, price, luggage handling, on-time performance, customer service, ease of reservations/ticketing, comfort, frequent flier programs and food.

Money magazine determined the nine factors and the importance of those factors based on a poll of 1,017 frequent fliers. The poll also found that frequent fliers ranked safety as their No. 1 concern, followed by price. Northwest received a perfect score of 100 in the price category.

WorldClubs among the best of the best -- July 1997
Travel Weekly in its July 28, 1997, issue named Northwest Airlines' WorldClubs as one of the best airline membership clubs/lounges, along with Continental and Delta.

J.D. Power and Associates and Frequent Flyer magazine, a sister publication of Travel Weekly, performed the rating, which is based on more than 7,000 evaluations from frequent flyers.

Northwest recognized in Congressional Record -- August 1997
Northwest was recognized in a U.S. Senate session by Michigan Senator Spencer Abraham for assistance it provided Michigan civil rights leader Rosa Parks and her organization -- the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self Development.

Northwest provided free air travel for approximately 30 youth who were involved in a bus accident July 30 while on the institute's annual historical tour of the route of the underground railroad. Many of the individuals on board the bus sustained serious injuries, and one chaperon was killed.

"Mr. President I rise today to express my thanks to a number of organizations and individuals who gave of themselves at a crucial time for the people of Michigan," said Abraham. "The immediate and overwhelming response from the Detroit-area business community was to ask how they could help. Northwest Airlines provided free air travel to the students stranded so far away from home, and also arranged to transport the body of the deceased home to Michigan."

Northwest Airlines wins award for WCCO I-Team response -- June 1997
Northwest Airlines won the Silver Anvil Award of Excellence in crisis communications at the Public Relations Society of America annual awards presentation in New York June 12. The award was given for Northwest's response to the investigative series produced by Minneapolis/St. Paul television station WCCO-TV.

Northwest's reaction to the WCCO-TV series (aired in April and May of 1996) gained national attention when the two companies brought the dispute to the Minnesota News Council to decide whether WCCO-TV had engaged in deceptive journalistic reporting. The News Council overwhelmingly supported Northwest in all its claims.

The Silver Anvil Award is one of the most prestigious recognition awards in the public relations community. Northwest was one of 91 companies to be recognized of nearly 700 total entries submitted.
