PRAIRIE
GIANT: THE TOMMY DOUGLAS STORY
Celebrate the extraordinary life and achievements
of Tommy Douglas with the CBC Big Ticket
presentation Prairie Giant: The Tommy
Douglas Story. This two-part, four-hour
dramatic miniseries airs Sunday, March 12th
and Monday, March 13th at 8pm on CBC Television.
Directed by filmmaker John N. Smith (The
Boys of St. Vincent, Dieppe), the miniseries
stars Michael Therriault and Kristin Booth
as Tommy and Irma Douglas. It was written
by Bruce Smith and produced by Kevin DeWalt.
Tommy Douglas' passion, integrity, leadership
and innovations inspired the nation to elect
him as the "greatest Canadian".
This spirited champion of the people left
a legacy of political, humanitarian and
social reforms of which every Canadian can
be proud.
Kristin Booth and Michael Therriault play
Irma and Tommy Douglas in this two-part
miniseries.
In November 2004, Canadians voted Tommy Douglas
the greatest Canadian of all time following
a nationwide contest on CBC Television called
The Greatest Canadian. Over 1.2 million
votes were cast.
The former teenage amateur light-weight boxing
champion of Manitoba, Baptist minister, five-time
Premier of Saskatchewan and inaugural leader
of the NDP became a socialist out of love
for humanity. Vision, eloquence, wit and a
passionate commitment to social causes made
Tommy C. Douglas an unstoppable political
force.
From his first foray into public office politics
to his post-retirement years, Canada's 'father
of Medicare' earned himself the respect of
millions of Canadians, including many of his
political opponents.
The filmmakers were thrilled to cast Dora
award-winning actor Michael Therriault (Mel
Brooks' The Producers, Fiddler On the
Roof) as Tommy Douglas. It's his first
major television role.
Some of Canada's greatest stars - including
Paul Gross and Nicholas Campbell - were
so inspired by The Tommy Douglas Story
that they jumped at the chance to take part.
Actor Michael Therriault was awestruck by
the number of great Canadian actors that appear
in the miniseries.
Actor R.H. Thomson says the Medicare debate
sparked by Tommy Douglas is still going on
here. "The struggles in his life are
still being reworked through now," says
Thomson.
As premier of Saskatchewan and first federal
NDP leader, Tommy Douglas is widely regarded
as a pioneer of universal health care. But
it was a tough battle, undertaken during
the Cold War, when the socialist agenda
was often received with skepticism and a
"communist" label.
To help tell the story of the doctors' strike
in Saskatchewan, writer Bruce Smith created
a composite character, inspired by real
people. Actor R.H. Thomson plays Dr. Moulds,
leader of the doctors' struggle against
Medicare and one of Tommy Douglas' fiercest
opponents.
Producer Kevin DeWalt, a native of Saskatchewan
himself, is proud that the miniseries was
filmed entirely in his home province, where
Tommy Douglas launched and established his
political career.
